4 min readThe house that desire built
Between Father and Son never gave me a second to think. I wanted one. The show is built to starve you of that second, then sell the hunger back as plot. Reflection would ruin the trick. The rush is the product, the feeling of being pulled under by something you already know you should refuse.
The setup is telenovela chemistry mixed fast. Bárbara, a lawyer, arrives at her fiancé Álvaro's family estate to meet his son, Santiago. Within minutes the air between her and Santiago snaps.
The attraction does not bend the family rules. It breaks them. Subtlety is not on the clock.
Episodes run under ten minutes. A glance, a loaded pause, a sudden storm of music. Each one exists to shove you into the next cliffhanger.
Whether they will act is settled. The game is how many delays the show can stack before you need them to.

Impulse is the plot. Desire cuts the logic. The micro-episode format is how that feeling gets delivered.
Each installment ends on a revelation or a decision. You do not get a minute to argue with the characters, because the next episode has already started. It is addictive the way junk food is addictive.
Not because it feeds you. Because it is built to be eaten in one sitting. The series plays like a line of emotional dominoes, each piece placed to knock the next one over.
Dominoes are only as interesting as the hand that sets them up. This hand is often clumsy. The writing lurches from poetic to painfully on-the-nose, sometimes in the same scene.
Audience Opinions
"A flashy micro-series experiment weighed down by clumsy writing, uneven acting, and a rushed telenovela-style plot that rarely feels convincing."
Short, cliffhanger-driven episodes make the show easy to binge and create a certain so-bad-it’s-watchable pull for some, but most of the story beats land as cheesy, overstuffed, and poorly thought out. latestnetflix.com's read is that Acting and dialogue are widely criticized, with several viewers calling the performances cringeworthy and laughing at scenes that are meant to be serious, while the micro-episode structure chops the narrative into rushed jumps that leave big gaps in character logic.
- Fast, bingeable format Very short episodes and constant twists make it quick to finish and easy to let one episode roll into the next.
- Cliffhangers every episode Frequent shock endings keep curiosity alive even for viewers who find the show bad on most other fronts.
- Twisty melodramatic plot Packed with betrayals, forbidden attraction, and sudden turns that appeal to those who enjoy heightened soap-style drama.
- Weak writing and plot The story is called dumb, chaotic, and poorly constructed, with big leaps that never feel earned.
- Cringeworthy performances Several reviews describe the acting as terrible or non-existent, with dramatic scenes turning unintentionally funny.
- Rushed, fragmented pacing The micro-episode structure jumps between developments so fast that motivations and in-between events feel missing.
- Cheap overall feel Viewed as a low-budget vertical-content experiment whose production values and execution do not justify the hype.
- Annoying technical issues Some report episodes playing only music and background sound with no dialogue audio in the chosen language.
Buzz & Rumors
Public reportsNetflix told the cast this format was a bet.
Pamela Almanza said the platform warned her from day one that nobody knew what would happen with Between Father and Son. The English title is the translation of Entre padre e hijo. Netflix had not tried a Mexican microseries like this. Twenty chapters of about ten minutes. All of them dumped on 13 May 2026. She called the shoot a blast. People have less time, she said, but the same hunger for a full story. latestnetflix.com's take is that Sit down, finish it, no year-long wait for the next season.
That is the column, not another hacienda recap. Netflix and TIS Productions built a short-form soap in horizontal frames and asked whether TikTok-length episodes could still look like cinema.
The numbers arrived before the critics did.
Angela Suarez, TIS VP of development and production, told PRODU the show sat at number three globally in Netflix's non-English TV Top 10 during premiere week. Number one in 12 countries. Inside the Top 10 in 60. Five million views. Carolina Leconte, Netflix VP of content for Mexico, said the company wanted members to choose how and when they watch, and that short horizontal episodes were the test. Suarez called Chilean writer Pablo Illanes "the king of surprise." A telenovela beat that used to take three chapters now resolves in one scene, she said. They shot the estate in three or four weeks, one hacienda doing the work of many sets. Fernando Urdapilleta directed. Paula Parra co-wrote.
The stepson plot, and the last name on morning TV.
Almanza plays Barbara, a lawyer who visits her fiance's family estate and falls for his son. Erick Elias is Alvaro, a pilot whose first wife is missing. Graco Sendel is Iker. Common Sense Media dated the premiere 13 May 2026, rated it TV-MA, and flagged guns, infidelity, and sex with no nudity. Melissa Camacho called the 7-to-10-minute chapters disjointed and still interesting enough. IMDb sits around 4.3 from hundreds of votes. Netflix Latinoamerica posted the official trailer on 28 April. El Espectador placed the shoot in Mexico, with some locations in El Ajusco and Tepeji del Rio in winter.
Sendel is the son of telenovela villain Sergio Sendel. After the drop, Mexican press asked the father about Graco's nude scenes. On Sale el Sol, Sergio said the career calls belong to his son, and that if the part needed those shots, Graco had to do them. Treat that as a parent on morning TV, not a filing. The same forbidden-stepson pitch still put the series on the U.S. and Latin America Top 10.
Almanza told El Universal the women in these soaps now act like they never cry. She wanted Barbara to have vulnerability. Ten minutes a chapter, and the algorithm liked it more than the critics did.
