The desperate glitter of a washed-up star

I've met Samantha before. Not Emanuelle Araújo in Samantha!, Netflix's first Brazilian comedy. The type.

Too-tight leopard print. A glass of something strong at 11 a.m. A woman telling anyone who will listen about the time she was somebody.

She hangs around nostalgia panels, signing autographs for fans who mostly came to gawk at the fall. Seven episodes ask a mean little question. What if the delusions were the show?

Samantha is a former child star of 1980s Brazilian TV, cooking up unhinged schemes to claw back into the spotlight. A Brazilian The Comeback, if Valerie Cherish had been raised on Xou da Xuxa instead of Roseanne. TV and City called it a "by-the-numbers comedy". That is not wrong.

I am not sure it is entirely fair. The numbers are the point. Her life already runs like a sitcom.

The show's trick is making us complicit in her refusal to notice.

Samantha in a neon-lit room, mid-monologue, her expression a mix of desperation and performative charm

The pilot's centerpiece is a fall. Samantha, convinced a viral video will revive her, stages an "accidental" tumble down a mall staircase. Shot like a live studio show.

Bright lighting, wide angles, physical bits that would have earned a laugh track in 1987. The tone is all wrong. The fall is not slapstick.

It is grotesque. Her face contorts as she realizes the crowd is not laughing with her. A middle-aged woman in a cheap wig, eating tile.

It should be cringe. Underneath it is a death rattle. She has spent her whole life performing, and the performance has nowhere left to go.

Audience Opinions

Audience 6.5/10
"A quirky Brazilian comedy with flashes of humor but struggles to sustain its premise over time."

Viewers appreciate the show’s bold, over-the-top humor and the lead’s energetic performance, which bring a unique flavor to the series. However, many find the jokes hit-or-miss, with some episodes feeling repetitive or too reliant on shock value rather than clever writing. latestnetflix.com's view is that the balance between absurdity and coherence is often uneven, leaving some underwhelmed by the overall execution.

Common complaints

Netflix’s "Samantha!" (2018): The Campy Comeback Story You Missed

Netflix’s Samantha! (2018) is the kind of show that thrives on chaos—both on-screen and, if the scant behind-the-scenes chatter is any indication, off it. A Brazilian comedy series about a washed-up child star desperate for a comeback, the show leans into cringe, satire, and over-the-top humor. But while the premise is clear, details about its production, cast dynamics, and reception remain frustratingly thin. latestnetflix.com's view is that here’s what we do know—and where the rumors start to swirl.

A Comeback for a Comeback: The Premise

Samantha! follows the titular has-been (played by Emanuelle Araújo), a former 90s Brazilian TV icon who clings to relevance by any means necessary. The show’s trailer teases her increasingly unhinged schemes, from faking a pregnancy to staging a kidnapping—all while her long-suffering husband (played by Douglas Silva) rolls his eyes in the background. The tone is Arrested Development meets Telenovela, with a healthy dose of Brazilian absurdity.

Season 2’s trailer doubles down on the madness, hinting at Samantha’s escalating delusions, including a disastrous attempt to launch a fitness empire. The show’s meta-commentary on celebrity culture and nostalgia is sharp, but whether it landed with audiences is harder to pin down. Netflix doesn’t release viewership numbers, and critical reception is sparse.

Who’s Behind the Madness?

The show’s creators—Brazilian comedy duo Rafael Dragaud and Esmir Filho—are known for their work on A Mulher Invisível (2011), a cult favorite in Brazil’s sketch-comedy scene. Their fingerprints are all over Samantha!’s rapid-fire jokes and self-aware humor, but beyond that, details about the writing process or on-set antics are nonexistent.

The cast, too, is a mystery. Emanuelle Araújo’s performance is the show’s anchor, but interviews or behind-the-scenes anecdotes about her collaboration with the creators or co-stars are conspicuously absent. The same goes for Douglas Silva, whose deadpan reactions to Samantha’s antics are a highlight. If there were tensions, rivalries, or improvisational gold on set, they haven’t surfaced in the limited evidence .

The Rumor Mill: What’s Unconfirmed (But Tantalizing)

With so little official chatter, the void has been filled by speculation. Here’s where the gossip gets murky:

Was the Show a Flop?

Netflix canceled Samantha! after two seasons, a move that often signals low engagement. However, without official data, it’s impossible to say whether the show was a cult hit or a dud. The lack of awards buzz or critical deep dives suggests it didn’t break out internationally, but in Brazil, it may have found a niche audience.

Samantha’s Real-Life Parallels

The show’s premise—a former child star clinging to fame—has led to inevitable comparisons to real-life Brazilian celebrities. Some fans have drawn parallels to Xuxa, the iconic children’s entertainer who dominated Brazilian TV in the 90s, though there’s no evidence the show was directly inspired by her . Others have pointed to Samantha!’s satire of influencer culture, a theme that resonated globally in the late 2010s.

Cast Drama?

The internet loves a good feud, and YouTube is littered with clickbait videos about "Samantha" (though most are about unrelated figures, like Indian actress Samantha Ruth Prabhu ). None of the drama in these videos pertains to Samantha! (2018), but the lack of real behind-the-scenes dirt has left room for wild theories. For example, one unverified Reddit thread speculated that Araújo and Silva clashed over the show’s tone, but this is pure rumor with no sourcing.

Why Did It Disappear?

Netflix’s algorithm is notorious for burying shows, and Samantha! may have been a victim of its own niche appeal. The show’s humor is deeply rooted in Brazilian pop culture, which could have limited its international reach. Additionally, the rise of Portuguese-language content like 3% and Sintonia may have overshadowed Samantha!’s more campy, comedic vibe.

There’s also the possibility that the show simply ran its course. Season 2’s trailer hints at Samantha’s arc reaching a natural endpoint, and without a clear path forward, Netflix may have opted not to renew it. But again, without official statements, this is speculation.

The Bottom Line

Samantha! (2018) is a fascinating case study in how quickly a show can fade from the conversation. It had the ingredients for a cult classic—sharp writing, a fearless lead, and a premise ripe for satire—but the lack of behind-the-scenes coverage or critical deep dives leaves it in a strange limbo. Was it a hidden gem? A noble failure? Without more evidence, we may never know.

For now, the show remains a footnote in Netflix’s vast catalog, a reminder that even in the streaming era, some stories slip through the cracks.
