The Unseen Contract

I keep thinking about Yorkie in the Black Mirror episode "San Junipero," the second she lets the brake go. The car does not crash. It soars.

Physics bends. Love's rules bend with it. Til Death Do Us Part, a 2019 anthology from the people behind MirrorFiction, lives in that same hallway, where want and fear share a wall and the contracts we sign with each other get rewritten in code.

A dimly lit room where a couple sits on opposite ends of a couch, their reflections warped in a fractured mirror

The title pokes. "Til death do us part" is the old vow, said at weddings like a charm against the obvious. What if death is not the ending?

What if the parting shows up long before a grave? Each hour is a closed parable about the bargains we strike when love outlives the terms. The source is MirrorFiction, a bench of speculative shorts.

The mirror is a door, not decor.

That first still is the argument. The couple on the couch already occupy different apartments inside one room. The broken glass does not soothe.

Audience Opinions

Audience 5.6/10
"A Taiwanese anthology blending drama and horror that leaves viewers divided over its execution."

The series is praised for its ambitious mix of drama and horror, offering an anthology format that stands out in its genre. However, its short runtime per episode and uneven pacing leave some viewers wanting more depth and consistency in storytelling. latestnetflix.com's view is that the horror elements are hit-or-miss, with some finding them effective while others see them as underdeveloped.

The Mandarin title is Mirror Literature Horror Theater. The English card reads Til Death Do Us Part. That is not the 2026 true-crime film about a Nevada widower. This is MirrorFiction's first screen project, seven Mandarin shorts of about 30 minutes, dumped together on 15 August 2019, lunar calendar Ghost Festival, across Netflix, iQiyi Taiwan, and friDay. Public Television picked up a later window on 8 September. The 21st Taipei Film Festival had already given it a world premiere at the end of June. Booking a Hungry Ghost date is a press stunt. latestnetflix.com's view is that it also told you exactly what the publisher wanted the set to feel like., , ,

They ran a contest, then hired seven directors.

Mirror Literature, the fiction arm of Taiwan's Mirror Media group, opened a short-outline contest in July 2017. Winners sat with professional writers, including coordinator Chang Yao-sheng, and turned 2,500-word outlines into half-hour scripts. Directors were chosen in May 2018. Producers Dong Cheng-yu, the imprint's editor-in-chief, and veteran film producer Yeh Ju-fen shepherded the set. Chairman Pei Wei stood at a Huashan press event and called it the company's first step into a full production chain, then floated a second season of the theater brand. This particular seven-film drop stayed a one-and-done miniseries. Netflix's order is Hit and Run, Perfectly Spotless, Big Cat, No Pets Allowed, Last Stop Paradise, Perfect Lily, and Tunnel. Western recaps reached for Black Mirror. The local press talked about bubble tea, hit-and-run ghosts, and apartment bylaws. , ,

The kid in the no-pets building took a Golden Bell.

No Pets Allowed, directed by Liu Bang-yao, put 12-year-old Bai Xiao-ying opposite her real brother Bai Run-yin as neighbors in a building that bans cats, with Nikki Hsieh as a mother who works nights. The short sat on the Taipei festival audience board for days. At the 55th Golden Bell Awards in September 2020 the anthology took five nominations. Bai won Most Promising Newcomer. Hsieh was up for supporting actress. Hit and Run, Wang Wei-hsiang's time-loop crash with Lin He-hsuan, was nominated for editing and had already been a Taipei Film Award short-film nominee. Perfectly Spotless and Last Stop Paradise went to Bucheon. Heaven of Horror treated the whole thing as a Taiwanese answer to British tech dread. IMDb still has it at a quiet 6.2 from a couple hundred votes. The gossip is not a casting war. It is a magazine group using Ghost Month and a child star to prove it could feed Netflix. , , ,
