The hustle that eats its young

I keep looking at the title. Yahoo+. 2022. That little plus sign is doing work. In Nigeria, "Yahoo boys" are internet scammers who have become folk antiheroes, digital-age tricksters trying to outrun poverty with stolen names and fake mail.

The plus promises an upgrade. A next level. Maybe even a kind of legitimacy.

What does that upgrade cost? The film seems to ask. I have not seen it.

I will not invent the con.

Ose and Abacha are childhood friends who have hit a wall in their Nollywood dreams. Broke and frustrated, they treat cybercrime as a side hustle, then learn the money is slower than the myth. Mansa, a Hong Kong-based crime lord, offers them a way into "Yahoo+," whatever that means.

The pitch does not spell out the product. The implication is ugly. The hustle does not stop.

It just gets darker.

Two men in a dimly lit room, one gesturing emphatically while the other looks on with a mix of skepticism and curiosity

Ebuka Njoku is working a Nollywood staple, the cybercrime drama. Those films walk a line. Cautionary tale on one side, fascination with the audacity of the hustle on the other.

Audience Opinions

Broad evidence
Audience 6.0/10
"A solid but uneven Nollywood crime drama that delivers on its premise but lacks polish and depth."

*Yahoo+* (2022) nails its premise: two struggling actors turn to cybercrime, only to get entangled with a Hong Kong crime lord. The plot is tight, the stakes feel real, and the cast—especially Ken Erics and Ifeoma Obinwa—gives committed performances. Reactions split, though. Supporters praise its gritty, no-nonsense take on internet fraud in Nigeria as a refreshing change from the usual Nollywood rom-coms. Detractors say the execution falls short of its ambitions, citing uneven pacing, underdeveloped side characters, and a third act that wraps up too neatly. The low-budget look also occasionally distracts from the story. Despite these flaws, *Yahoo+* is generally seen as a step in the right direction for Nollywood thrillers, even if it doesn’t reach the heights of its influences.

What viewers praise
  • Strong Premise and Plot A tight, high-stakes plot about two friends who pivot from acting to cybercrime. The premise feels fresh and relevant next to Nollywood’s usual fare, and the Hong Kong crime lord adds an international twist.
  • Committed Performances Ken Erics and Ifeoma Obinwa draw consistent praise. Erics brings depth to his role as one of the lead fraudsters, Obinwa plays a morally conflicted character convincingly, and the cast chemistry is frequently highlighted.
  • Gritty, Realistic Tone Unlike many Nollywood films, *Yahoo+* avoids melodrama for a gritty, realistic tone, a break from a genre often dominated by romantic comedies or over-the-top dramas. Tackling cybercrime head-on is seen as a bold move.
Common complaints
  • Uneven Pacing and Execution The first half drags while the second rushes to a conclusion, and the middle act in particular needed more development as the plot loses momentum.
  • Underdeveloped Side Characters The leads are strong, but side characters—including the Hong Kong crime lord—come across as one-dimensional or rushed.
  • Low-Budget Aesthetic The low-budget look occasionally distracts from the story; not a dealbreaker for most, but noticeable in scenes where production values are clearly limited.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

A bar job in Asaba talked him out of becoming a Yahoo Boy.

Ebuka Njoku has said the first spark for Yahoo+ was not a treatment meeting. It was a bar in Asaba in 2019, during a break from Nollywood, where he overheard Yahoo Boys talk shop. Open Country Mag has him putting it plainer. He had already given up once. Lost, he tried "yahoo" himself and got told to focus on learning the trade instead of making money. That, he said, is when easy money looked like a delusion. latestnetflix.com's take is that he was also scared of the next step, the one the street calls yahoo plus.Ritual work. The film is that fear, written down.,

Pulse Nigeria dated the cinema opening to 1 July 2022 through FilmOne. The crime story sits in Enugu and runs less than a day. Childhood friends Ose and Abacha cannot break into Nollywood, so they hustle internet fraud. A Hong Kong voice named Mansa offers them the upgrade. The catch is ritual killing. Friends turn on each other. Keezyto plays Ose. Somadina Adinma is Abacha. Ken Erics is Ikolo. Echelon Mbadiwe is Kamso. Ifeoma Obinwa is Pino-Pino. Lorenzo Menakaya, who co-produced, plays Mansa.

Njoku shot one long take per scene, natural light, six people. He told interviewers he knew a first feature would not get every naira in Lagos, so he trapped the story in one house. Menakaya told Open Country Mag the preproduction budget felt like a lot, then the money vanished before principal photography. They went back to the executive producer and leaned on friends in the crew. Njoku later said Ken Erics was not his first choice, or his second. The first four names fell through. Menakaya pushed Erics. The gun grab in the room sold the director.,

Festivals first. Netflix a year late.

The film premiered at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, then picked up Best Narrative Feature and Best Actress for Mbadiwe at the Eastern Nigeria International Film Festival. Coal City and The Annual Film Mischief in Lagos followed. A lack of funds, they said, killed a proper international festival tour. Small distributors lowballed them. A chance meeting with FilmOne's Moses Babatope put it in cinemas. Wikipedia still folds the Netflix date into 1 July 2022. Afrocritik, writing in July 2023, said the digital debut was 21 July 2023. That is the version that matches the theatrical year.,,

Once it streamed, Open Country Mag called it a Netflix No. 1 hit in Nigeria. IMDb users have been colder, parking it around 3.5. Njoku told Afrocritik he might have the theory of yahoo plus wrong, and that he still wanted people to question what they think the slang means. He also told Open Country the Flavour and Umu Obiligbo song "Isi Onwe" locked the story because you do not know the cost of an adventure until it is too late. The official trailer, posted in 2021, already asked whether money ritual is real or just the movies they grew up on.,,,
