The blast that will not finish

Suicide movies usually pick a lane. Quiet ones, pills and bridges. Loud ones, the act as the peak. Fireworks (2023) offers a loop instead.

Four people, bound by despair, decide to blow themselves up with a massive ball of fireworks. They light the fuse. The explosion comes.

They are still there, whole, unharmed, back at the start. Again. The film is filed as drama, thriller, even science fiction.

The feeling in the frames is a nightmare with the exit sealed.

The premise is enough to sit you up. Suicide as a time loop is a high-concept bet that turns cheap if the film only winks. The logline is a psychological scrape. The group is stuck with the wish to die, then with the fact that dying will not take. Pain with no off switch. The stills do not soften that.

A close-up of a face half-lit by flickering light, eyes wide with something between terror and resignation

It does not resemble the Indonesian thrillers I already know. No The Raid pulse. No Impetigore folk horror.

Ringgo Agus Rahman, Marsha Timothy, and Vino G. Bastian can play a lot with little talk, and the frames look built for that. Flicker on a face.

Herwin Novianto’s "Fireworks" (2023): A Gritty Indonesian Thriller with Star Power

Indonesian director Herwin Novianto returns to the big screen with Fireworks (2023), a drama-thriller that promises to blend tension with emotional depth. Best known for his work on 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7, Novianto reunites with some of Indonesia’s most recognizable actors for this project, though details about the film’s plot and production remain surprisingly scarce.

A Star-Studded Cast with Familiar Faces

Fireworks boasts an ensemble cast featuring Ringgo Agus Rahman (My Stupid Boss), Marsha Timothy (The Raid 2), and Donny Damara (Impetigore), all of whom have previously collaborated with Novianto. The film also marks the return of Vino G. Bastian (Habibie & Ainun), a major box-office draw in Indonesia, alongside rising stars like Hanggini Purinda Retto and Sherrafie Gabrielle.

While the exact roles remain unconfirmed, the mix of seasoned performers and fresh talent suggests a story with high stakes—likely a family drama or crime thriller, given Novianto’s past work and the film’s listed genres.

Production Mysteries and Delays

Unlike Novianto’s previous films, Fireworks has flown under the radar, with little official promotion or behind-the-scenes coverage. The film’s original title, Kembang Api (Indonesian for "fireworks"), hints at a narrative centered on explosive revelations or emotional confrontations. However, no trailers or official synopses have surfaced, leaving fans to speculate about its tone and themes.

Rumors suggest the project faced delays, possibly due to pandemic-related production challenges or script revisions. If true, this could explain the lack of buzz compared to Novianto’s other recent releases.

How Does It Compare to Novianto’s Other Work?

Novianto has built a reputation for heartfelt dramas with social commentary, like 2nd Miracle in Cell No. 7 (2022), a remake of the Korean hit Miracle in Cell No. 7. Fireworks appears to take a darker turn, leaning into thriller territory—a departure from his usual blend of comedy and drama.

The film’s 104-minute runtime suggests a tight, suspense-driven story, but without a trailer or reviews, it’s unclear how well the shift in genre will land. Early listings on platforms like SensCritique describe it as a "drama-thriller," but no critical reception or audience scores are available yet.

What’s Next for "Fireworks"?

As of now, Fireworks lacks a confirmed release date outside Indonesia, and no major streaming deals have been announced. Given the cast’s star power, it’s likely targeting a theatrical run in Southeast Asia before potential digital distribution.

For now, fans of Novianto and Indonesian cinema will have to wait for more details—or hope for a surprise trailer drop. Until then, Fireworks remains one of 2023’s most intriguing, if elusive, projects.
