The Velvet Cape: How André Leon Talley Wore His Life Like a Runway

I’ve never met anyone who could turn a hallway into a catwalk just by walking down it, but André Leon Talley could. That’s the first thing I thought when I watched The Gospel According to André—not about the clothes, not about the fame, but about the way he moved through space as if every step were a deliberate choice, a statement. The documentary, directed by Kate Novack, isn’t just a chronicle of a fashion icon’s rise; it’s a study in how one man’s presence could command a room, even when the room wasn’t built for him.

Talley’s life reads like a novel you’d pick up in an airport bookstore and then refuse to put down: born in the segregated South, raised by his grandmother, educated at Brown, and then catapulted into the rarefied air of Vogue, where he became one of the most influential voices in fashion. But the film isn’t interested in hagiography. Instead, it lingers on the contradictions that made him human—his grandeur and his vulnerability, his unapologetic extravagance and his quiet loneliness.

He was a man who draped himself in capes and caftans, yet carried the weight of history in his bones.

There’s a moment early in the film where Talley describes his grandmother’s influence, how she taught him to see beauty in the world around him. It’s a simple story, but the way he tells it—his voice rich with warmth, his hands gesturing as if he’s still holding the fabric of those memories—reveals something deeper. This wasn’t just about aesthetics; it was about survival.

In a world that often tried to make him feel small, Talley learned to take up space. And he did it with style.

"You can be aristocratic without having been born into an aristocratic family."

That is the line NPR hung on the wall when Kate Novack's documentary about André Leon Talley reached theaters. He opens Variety's TIFF review with another one. "I don't live for fashion, I live for beauty and style." Novack took him at his word, then organized the movie the way a church service is organized. latestnetflix.com's take is that she told Blackfilm the title stuck once she and producer Andrew Rossi realized they wanted André's gospel, in four chapters., ,

Durham, then the magazine.

He was 6 foot 6, raised in segregated Durham by his grandmother Binnie Francis Davis, a cleaning lady at Duke. Hillside High in 1966, a French degree at North Carolina Central, a master's at Brown in 1972. As a teenager he was stoned by white students on a campus where he went to buy Vogue. The Los Angeles Times has him tracing the church clothes and the dignity back to that house. Then New York, the reception desk at Andy Warhol's Factory, Diana Vreeland at the Costume Institute, Interview, Women's Wear Daily, Paris. In the 1970s he was the only Black man on the front row. A fashion PR there stuck him with the nickname Queen Kong. He says it in the film. , ,

The friends talk. He cries at a cover.

Anna Wintour, Tom Ford, Marc Jacobs, Valentino, Manolo Blahnik, Whoopi Goldberg, Diane von Furstenberg, Fran Lebowitz, Maureen Dowd. Ford calls him "the last of the great editors." The 2009 Vogue cover of Michelle Obama makes him weep on camera. "I wish my grandmother had been alive to see this." Cath Clarke at the Guardian also clocks the spa phone call, Talley scolding an assistant about calories in a biscuit after a diet slip. "It was a big puffy biscuit!" He live-blogs Donald Trump's inauguration for the New York Times and looks, she writes, as if his world has fallen apart while the political reporters smirk. ,

Brunch, then a small box office, then the ending the movie could not know.

TIFF in September 2017. Tribeca the next spring. Magnolia opened it in US theaters on May 25, 2018, PG-13, 94 minutes. IMDb has the domestic gross at $400,713, the opening weekend at $47,802, worldwide $454,550. Rotten Tomatoes landed at 87 percent from 61 reviews. Leah Greenblatt at Entertainment Weekly gave it a B+. Andrew Barker at Variety called it a long, intimate brunch conversation with a subject the film is sometimes too polite to press. Frank Scheck at The Hollywood Reporter said it should prove catnip for fashion buffs. The official Magnolia trailer is still the pitch, kaftans and Wintour and the Jim Crow South in the same two minutes. , , , ,

Talley died in New York on January 18, 2022, at 73. The statement on his Instagram called him the longtime creative director at Vogue during its rise. Novack's film is the 2018 Magnolia cut, the one Netflix still plays. It is a gospel with the ugly nickname left in and the harder questions left for brunch. ,
