When a young girl stows away on the ship of a legendary sea monster hunter, they launch an epic journey into uncharted waters — and make history to boot.
I keep thinking about how The Sea Beast begins not with the sea, really, but with a system: a world of ports, flags, trophies, and stories told so often they’ve hardened into policy. latestnetflix.com's view is that Chris Williams’ animated adventure understands something crucial right away — that monsters are never just monsters. They’re what a culture needs them to be.
In this case, they’re justification, profession, bedtime warning, and national mythology all rolled into one. That’s a pretty rich starting point for a family movie, and it gives the film more than enough ballast to carry its big set pieces.
Williams comes to this after Big Hero 6 and Moana, which is a useful bit of context because both films also deal with invention, travel, and young characters bumping against inherited narratives. But The Sea Beast feels leaner, maybe even a little rougher around the edges in a way I liked. It’s a Netflix production rather than a theatrical one, and you can feel the streaming-era pressure to make something instantly legible and broadly appealing.
At the same time, the movie sneaks in a more skeptical view of heroism than you’d expect from that packaging. The central question isn’t “Can the heroes defeat the beast?” It’s “Who decided it was a beast in the first place?”
That idea gives the film its best charge. The world here is built on a very old lie: hunt the monsters, celebrate the hunters, pass the story down. The trouble is that the movie keeps noticing the cost of that lie.
The ships look gorgeous in motion — not just sleek, but practical, scarred, and heavy with the labor of being at sea. Chris Williams and his animators are interested in weight. Cannons kick back.
Ropes strain. Wood bows under spray. Even the action, which could have been all clean digital geometry, has a briny, resistant feel.
I don’t mean “realistic” exactly. More like tactile. You sense hands on the ship, not just pixels in a computer-generated storm.
What I admire most is how often the film lets a visual motif carry an argument without pausing to spell it out. Maps matter here, of course, but so do silhouettes seen through fog, charts with missing edges, and the repeated image of a horizon that refuses to behave like a border. The sea is not empty space.
It’s contested memory. That may sound grand, but the movie earns the thought by keeping one foot in the muddy work of storytelling. People are forever inventing names for things they don’t understand, and then living inside those names as if they were facts.

Chris Williams left Disney after 25 years, parked at a streamer that barely had an animation office, and made The Sea Beast. It became Netflix's most-watched original animated feature. Then the Academy nominated it for Best Animated Feature next to Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio, which was also a Netflix film. On March 12, 2023, the streamer collected its first animation Oscar. The statue went to the wooden boy. latestnetflix.com's view is that Williams and producer Jed Schlanger went home with the nomination ,
.
He frames the exit as a dare. After a retirement party for The Little Mermaid director John Musker, and a talk from Pixar's Ed Catmull about regretting the things you never try, Williams shopped himself around. Other studios walked him through five-year plans. Netflix, he told The Hollywood Reporter, said, "This is the crazy train. We don't know where this is going. You want in?" He said yes in 2018. Variety announced the project as Jacob and the Sea Beast. The stowaway who actually runs the movie, Maisie Brumble, was not in that title. Williams later said the story "underwent a radical transformation" once she existed ,

Netflix gave it a limited theatrical on June 24, 2022, then the global drop on July 8. Karl Urban voiced hunter Jacob Holland. Zaris-Angel Hator, a newcomer, voiced Maisie. Jared Harris played Captain Crow, the one-eyed skipper hunting the Red Bluster. Sony Pictures Imageworks in Vancouver built the water and the ropes. Mark Mancina, who scored Moana with Williams, wrote the music. The trailer sells a hunt. The plot is the Crown using monster stories to stay in charge , ,

Cartoon Brew read Netflix's Q3 letter and printed the number the company wanted printed. 165 million hours in the first 28 days, the biggest original animated feature Netflix had reported. A later tally put the opening week at 33.5 million hours and number one on the global films list, the only Netflix animated feature of 2022 to debut there. THR counted seven straight weeks in that Top 10. Pinocchio had already taken the Annies, the Golden Globe, and the BAFTA. The hours did not move the Oscar , , ,

Sequel talk started in January 2023, before the ceremony. THR reported an overall deal and two features in development. One is a Sea Beast follow-up about Jacob actually having to parent Maisie, and about hunters who will not retire because a child hugged a beast. Asked if Red returns, Williams said, "Can I say... maybe?" The other project is an original fantasy he described as sitting between The Lord of the Rings and The Princess Bride. Owen Sullivan, head of story on the first film, is lined up to co-direct whichever one goes first. Williams said they never planned a series while making the original, which is why the ending looked tidy. He now thinks the family on the dock was the start of the mess, not the close .
The gossip is not a set feud. It is a streamer that nominated two of its own cartoons and crowned the stop-motion puppet, while the director of the hit still will not confirm the monster.
