Four buddies attend a class taught by a love guru who leads them to question their romantic attachments — until her hidden agenda comes to light.
I’ll admit it: I went into Whipped expecting a breezy, if slightly cringey, rom-com about modern relationships. What I got instead was a film so tonally confused it felt like watching four different movies stitched together with duct tape and bad puns. The premise—four friends attend a love guru’s class to cure their romantic woes—sounds ripe for satire, but the execution is less Crazy, Stupid, Love and more Crazy, Stupid, What Were You Thinking?
Chandra Liow, a YouTuber-turned-director, clearly wanted to flex his filmmaking muscles. The camera swerves and zooms like it’s late for a bus, and there’s a moment where the screen splits into four quadrants for no discernible reason other than to remind us that, yes, this is a movie. It’s the kind of directorial ego that might work in a music video but feels desperately out of place here.
The film’s visual style doesn’t serve the story; it distracts from it, like a magician who keeps dropping his props while trying to pull off a trick.

The escape room sequence is where Whipped fully unravels. What should be a high-stakes, comedic set piece instead becomes a slog of forced innuendo and awkward physical comedy. The friends are tied up, literally and figuratively, by their own insecurities, but the scene drags on so long it starts to feel like punishment.
There’s a moment where one character, desperate to escape, resorts to licking a key off another character’s face. It’s meant to be funny. It’s not.
The humor lands with all the grace of a dropped anvil, and the sexualization of the moment—played for laughs—feels especially tone-deaf in a film that’s already struggling to say something meaningful about relationships.
The script, which reportedly went through six revisions, still feels like a first draft. The characters are paper-thin, their motivations shifting with the wind. One minute they’re love-struck romantics, the next they’re cynical jerks.
The film can’t decide if it wants to mock the idea of being "whipped" (or bucin, as it’s called in Indonesian slang) or celebrate it, so it does both—badly. The result is a story that undermines its own message at every turn. Women are either materialistic gold-diggers or manipulative liars, and the men are either hopelessly devoted or pathetic pushovers.

On 7 July 2015, SkinnyIndonesian24 posted BUCIN - BUDAK CINTA, a five-minute bit about Indonesian men as love slaves. Andovi da Lopez later told KapanLagi the feature grew out of that clip. "Yes, so this is indeed from the Skinny content on July 7, 2015. The title is BUCIN, love slave." His brother Jovial wrote the script. Chandra Liow, from the Tim2one channel, latestnetflix.com contends, would direct and play a version of himself. Rapi Films, with Gope T. Samtani producing, booked Indonesian cinemas for 26 March 2020.,
The cinemas closed. Indonesian Wikipedia, citing Kompas, records the delay under Covid social-distancing rules. Netflix took the film worldwide on 18 September 2020, 190 countries, English title Whipped. Chandra spent a virtual press day that month insisting they were not stretching a YouTube video to ninety minutes. Andovi called that perception "very wrong." Chandra told Tempo he had spent 2019's time, money, and nerves proving he was not "just a YouTuber who puts his name on a film." Jovial was on his sixth produced script. The official trailer on Chandra's channel, posted in February while the cinema date was still alive, still argues this is a real movie after twelve years of YouTube. Two million views. English Wikipedia credits Tanya Yuson as co-writer with Jovial. The title song, also called BUCIN, is performed by Chandra, Andovi, Jovial, and Susan Sameh, written with Eka Gustiwana. Indonesian Wikipedia says the clip trended.,,,,
Susan Sameh plays Vania, a psychology candidate who drugs four friends into escape rooms labeled Patience, Honesty, and Courage. Deddy Corbuzier cameos as a yoga instructor. Gading Marten runs paintball. IMDb lists the 97-minute comedy as the third Indonesian Netflix original after The Night Comes for Us and Guru-Guru Gokil. Netflix's own note sold an "anti-whipped" class whose methods start to eat the friendships it claims to save.,,
English-language reviews did not care about the proof. Ready Steady Cut's Daniel Hart gave it 1.5 and called it unfunny, boring, and "not worth the discourse," arguing the film treats women as secondary and never delivers the twist the logline teases. Roger Moore, at Movie Nation, also landed at one and a half stars. The only bits that worked for him lived inside the escape room. IMDb sits at 4.2. RCTI still burned a two-hour television slot on 4 May 2022. The slang outlived the picture. The picture is the one Netflix kept.,,,
