The Brother Who Never Left

I keep thinking about the way Rajinikanth walks in Annaatthe. Not the swagger of his younger years—those sunglasses tossed into the air, the cigarette flicked behind his back—but something slower, heavier. His Kaaliyan moves like a man who has spent a lifetime carrying other people’s problems.

The village president of Madurai, he is called Annaatthe, Big Brother, and the title isn’t just honorific. It’s a job description. A burden.

A role he can’t quit, even when the script demands it.

A village elder in traditional attire stands with his arms crossed, surveying a crowd in a sunlit rural setting

There’s a moment early in the film where Kaaliyan sits on a porch, watching his nieces bicker over who will marry him. The camera lingers on his face—not in close-up, but in a medium shot that lets you see the weight of his silence. He doesn’t say much.

He doesn’t need to. Rajinikanth has spent decades perfecting the art of communicating volumes with a single raised eyebrow, a slight tilt of the head. Here, though, there’s a weariness to it.

This isn’t the invincible superstar of Enthiran or Kabali; this is a man who has been the rock for everyone else, and you wonder when he’ll get to be the one who cracks.

That’s the tension at the heart of Annaatthe, a film that wants to be both a masala entertainer and a meditation on familial duty. Director Siva, who has built a career on high-octane Tamil actioners like Vedalam and Viswasam, seems torn between these impulses. The result is a movie that feels like two different films stitched together with duct tape and good intentions.

On one hand, there’s the broad, colorful spectacle of village life—weddings, festivals, comic relief from Soori’s sidekick character, who exists primarily to deliver punchlines about Kaaliyan’s love life. On the other, there’s the darker thread of Kaaliyan’s sister moving to Kolkata, where she faces "unknown threats" that the film never quite bothers to define. The shift from one to the other is jarring, like watching a musical suddenly turn into a thriller without warning.

A group of women in vibrant saris stand in a line, their faces partially obscured by shadow

The Kolkata plotline is where Annaatthe stumbles most. The film teases danger—abduction, maybe? Domestic violence?—but when Kaaliyan finally arrives to rescue his sister, the resolution is so perfunctory it feels like a scene from a different movie.

Audience Opinions

Audience 6.5/10
"A mass-appeal Rajinikanth entertainer that leans heavily on star power but struggles with a formulaic plot and uneven pacing."

Viewers appreciate Rajinikanth’s charismatic presence and the film’s emotional family-driven moments, which resonate with fans of his larger-than-life persona. However, the predictable storyline, over-the-top action sequences, and comparisons to soap opera-style drama leave many feeling underwhelmed, especially given the high expectations set by the star cast.

What viewers praise
  • Rajinikanth’s star power His screen presence and mass appeal remain the biggest draw, delivering the expected energy and entertainment value.
  • Emotional family moments The film’s focus on sibling bonds and family dynamics strikes a chord with audiences who enjoy sentimental drama.
  • Entertaining mass scenes Certain action sequences and comedic moments are praised for their crowd-pleasing, high-energy style.
  • Keerthy Suresh’s performance Her portrayal is highlighted as a standout, bringing depth to her character and complementing Rajinikanth well.
Common complaints
  • Predictable storyline The plot is criticized for being overly familiar, lacking freshness or surprises in its execution.
  • Soap opera comparisons Many viewers feel the film’s drama and pacing resemble a television serial, detracting from its cinematic appeal.
  • Over-the-top action Some action sequences are seen as unrealistic and excessive, breaking immersion for parts of the audience.
  • Uneven pacing The film’s rhythm is inconsistent, with slow stretches that test patience despite the star-studded cast.
  • Underutilized cast Supporting actors like Nayanthara and Prakash Raj are seen as wasted in roles that don’t add much to the story.

Despite the star power and behind-the-scenes buzz, Annaatthe received mixed reviews upon release. Critics praised Rajinikanth’s performance and the film’s emotional core but found the plot predictable [1]. The movie’s runtime (163 minutes) and pacing were also points of contention . Still, it remained a commercial success, proving once again that Rajinikanth’s stardom transcends critical reception.
