The uncomfortable lightness of belief

I did not expect a Netflix documentary about near-death experiences and ghost visits to get under my skin. Skepticism is my default. Show me a floating orb in a photo and I will show you dust and a slow shutter. I thought Surviving Death would ask me to believe. It asked me to feel. Feeling is the riskier job.

Six episodes. Less an investigation than an invitation that hangs between evidence and emotion. No grainy UFO clips.

No mediums in capes with crystal balls. We meet people like Mary Jo Rapini, a psychotherapist who describes her own near-death experience with a quiet, almost clinical care, as if she is still trying to parse a dream. Tunnel.

Light. A rush of love. The familiar NDE beats.

What stays is not the plot of the vision. It is the small crack in her voice when she says she no longer fears death. That crack is the series' real subject.

Belief, or even the wish to believe, changes the person who carries it.

A dimly lit room with a figure standing near a window, the light casting long shadows that blur the line between presence and absence

The craft looks simple. Let people talk. No flashy reenactments.

No score swelling to tell you when to ache. The camera stays on faces, some wet, some strangely calm, as they recount moments that will not fit a lab note. A mother sees her dead daughter in a dream, then wakes to find a physical token left behind.

A man is pronounced dead for twenty minutes, then comes back with memories of a place that felt more real than the hospital room. The series does not demand you take those stories as proof. It asks you to sit with their weight.

Audience Opinions

Audience 6.8/10
"A thought-provoking but uneven exploration of the afterlife that resonates more with believers than skeptics."

The series dives into near-death experiences, reincarnation, and mediumship with compelling personal stories that leave many viewers emotionally moved. latestnetflix.com's view is that however, its heavy reliance on anecdotal evidence and lack of scientific rigor frustrates those seeking concrete answers, making it feel more like advocacy than investigation.

Netflix’s Surviving Death (2021): The Paranormal Docuseries That Divided Viewers

Netflix’s Surviving Death (2021) arrived with a trailer promising to explore the most unsettling question of all: what happens after we die? The six-part docuseries, based on Leslie Kean’s 2017 book of the same name, dives into near-death experiences, mediums, reincarnation, and other phenomena that challenge conventional science. latestnetflix.com's read is that but while the series sparked fascination—and skepticism—its behind-the-scenes details remain scarce, leaving fans to piece together the drama from reviews and reactions.

A Polarizing Premise

From the outset, Surviving Death leaned into its controversial subject matter. The official trailer teases eerie accounts of children recalling past lives, grieving parents communicating with the dead through mediums, and scientists attempting to explain the unexplained. But not everyone was convinced. Critics and viewers quickly split into two camps: those who found the series "life-changing" and those who dismissed it as exploitative or even fraudulent .

One of the most contentious episodes focused on mediums, particularly a segment featuring Tommy—a self-proclaimed psychic whose methods drew accusations of being a "scam" . While some viewers praised the series for its emotional depth, others argued it gave too much credibility to unproven claims. The divide highlighted a broader debate: should Netflix platform fringe theories without stronger skepticism?

Behind the Scenes: Limited but Intriguing Details

Unlike high-profile Netflix docuseries with behind-the-scenes exposés, Surviving Death has kept its production details under wraps. The director and key creative team remain unconfirmed, and no major cast interviews have surfaced—except for one notable exception.

Mike Anthony, a paranormal investigator, appeared in the series, and his involvement was later spotlighted in a YouTube feature . Anthony’s segment reportedly focused on his work with electronic voice phenomena (EVP), a practice where supposed spirit voices are captured on recording devices. His appearance suggests the series sought out real-life figures in the paranormal community, but beyond that, little is known about how the episodes were shaped or who greenlit the project.

Why the Silence?

The lack of behind-the-scenes buzz is unusual for a Netflix docuseries, especially one that stirred such strong reactions. Some speculate the series’ niche appeal kept it from generating the same level of hype as, say, The Tinder Swindler or Making a Murderer. Others argue its controversial subject matter may have led Netflix to avoid drawing extra attention to its production.

What is clear is that Surviving Death didn’t fade quietly. Reviews ranged from glowing ("a must-watch for anyone questioning mortality" ) to scathing ("a masterclass in pseudoscience" ). Whether that divide was intentional or accidental remains unanswered.

The Verdict: A Series That Haunts Its Audience

For believers, Surviving Death offered comfort and validation. For skeptics, it was a cautionary tale about the dangers of unchecked credulity. But with no follow-up or expanded interviews, the series remains a mystery—both in its content and its creation.

If Netflix ever revisits the afterlife on screen, fans will likely demand more transparency. Until then, Surviving Death stands as a fascinating, flawed experiment in blending science, spirituality, and entertainment.
