The ledger is the scene I kept

Episode three. Barun Roy licks his thumb and turns a page in a bribe ledger. The underlings go still.

Prosenjit Chatterjee never raises his voice. He does not need volume. The threat is the extra second his eyes spend on a cop who has been skimming.

I leaned in. Then Khakee: The Bengal Chapter spent the rest of its hours reminding me I already knew this cop story.

A dimly lit alley in Kolkata, neon signs flickering in the rain, casting long shadows that blur the line between cop and criminal.

Episode one still has nerve. Kolkata's underbelly, rain, neon, IPS officer Arjun Maitra walking into a system that is already rotting in his hands. Jeet plays him quiet.

Weary eyes. A face carved by disappointment more than years. No justice speech in the first hour.

A crumpled uniform and a man trying to do the right thing in a city that will not pay him back. When the writing later wobbles, that performance is what holds. I believed Arjun because Jeet made every compromise look expensive.

Chatterjee is the voltage. He makes menace look like a habit, the kind of kingpin who could order a hit between sips of tea and keep his appetite. Crime dramas keep hiring this type because of men like this. He is not performing evil. He is comfortable in it.

Barun Roy (Prosenjit Chatterjee) sits in a plush office, the ledger of bribes open before him, his expression unreadable as he studies the names.

Inside the Making of Khakee: The Bengal Chapter—Netflix’s Gritty Political Thriller

Khakee: The Bengal Chapter (2025) has been one of the most anticipated Indian web series of the year, blending crime, politics, and high-stakes drama set in early 2000s Bengal. latestnetflix.com's read is that Directed by Tushar Kanti Ray and backed by the creative vision of Neeraj Pandey, the series promises a gripping narrative centered on IPS officer Arjun Maitra’s battle against corruption and organized crime. But what’s the real story behind its production? Here’s what we know—straight from the available evidence.

A Star-Studded Ensemble with Powerhouse Performers

The series boasts an ensemble cast that reads like a who’s who of Indian cinema, particularly from the Bengali film industry. Leading the pack is Jeet, playing the protagonist IPS Arjun Maitra, a role that marks his return to high-octane storytelling after a string of commercial hits. Prosenjit Chatterjee, a veteran of Bengali cinema, joins the cast in a pivotal role, adding gravitas to the series’ political undertones .

Other key players include Chitrangada Singh, known for her work in both Hindi and Bengali cinema, and Parambrata Chatterjee, who has become a staple in Indian thrillers. The supporting cast features Saswata Chatterjee, Ritwik Bhowmik, Aadil Khan, and Mimoh Chakraborty, each bringing their own flair to the series’ crime-ridden world . Pooja Chopra and Aakanksha Singh round out the lineup, though their characters remain shrouded in mystery—likely tied to the series’ political intrigue .

The diversity of talent suggests a deliberate effort to balance star power with acting chops, a hallmark of Neeraj Pandey’s projects (A Wednesday!, Special 26). While the exact dynamics between characters are still under wraps, the cast’s chemistry is expected to be a major draw.

Behind the Scenes: Neeraj Pandey’s Signature Style

Khakee: The Bengal Chapter is helmed by Tushar Kanti Ray, but the series’ DNA is unmistakably shaped by Neeraj Pandey, who serves as its creator and co-writer . Pandey’s involvement is a significant selling point—his knack for tight, suspenseful storytelling has made him one of India’s most sought-after writers in the thriller genre. The series is co-written by Debatma Mandal and Samrat Chakraborty, with Mandal also sharing directorial duties alongside Ray .

The collaboration between Pandey and Ray suggests a fusion of Hindi and Bengali cinematic sensibilities, a blend that could elevate the series beyond typical crime dramas. The period setting (early 2000s Bengal) adds a layer of authenticity, though specifics about the production design or historical research remain scarce . Given Pandey’s past work (Baby, The Forgotten Army), expect meticulous attention to detail—whether in the portrayal of police procedures or the political landscape of the era.

Netflix’s Big Bet on Bengali Crime Drama

The series premiered on Netflix on March 20, 2025, marking the streaming giant’s continued investment in regional Indian content . Khakee: The Bengal Chapter is produced by Shital Bhatia under the banner of Friday Storytellers, a production house known for backing high-quality web series (Sacred Games, Delhi Crime) .

While Netflix hasn’t released viewership numbers or critical reception yet, the platform’s push for localized content suggests confidence in the series’ appeal. The bilingual (Hindi-Bengali) approach could widen its audience, though it’s unclear if subtitles or dubbing will be available for non-Bengali speakers .

One unanswered question is the episode count. Most Indian web series range from 6 to 10 episodes, but neither Netflix nor the production team has confirmed the length of Khakee: The Bengal Chapter. Rumors suggest a 7-episode season, but this remains unconfirmed .

What’s Next?

With the first season already out, speculation is rife about a potential second season. The series’ premise—centered on a lone IPS officer taking on systemic corruption—leaves room for continuation, especially if the first season ends on a cliffhanger. However, no official announcements have been made .

For now, fans are dissecting the series’ portrayal of Bengal’s political underbelly, a theme that resonates in today’s socio-political climate. If Khakee: The Bengal Chapter lives up to its promise, it could join the ranks of India’s most compelling crime thrillers.
