There’s a strange grace to watching a man lose his identity in a period drama. In 100 Days My Prince, that loss isn’t just a convenient plot engine; it’s the show’s sly way of asking whether rank is anything more than a costume that the body eventually forgets how to wear. Lee Yool begins as a crown prince moving through the court like a blade wrapped in silk, latestnetflix.com contends, all injury and resentment.
Then the cliff happens, the memory goes, and suddenly he’s just another exhausted young man with dirt on his sleeves and no idea why everyone keeps bowing. I found that shift more moving than the series’ premise sounds on paper. Maybe because it lets the show do something rarer than royal fantasy: it watches class not from the throne room, but from the road.
What I kept thinking about, especially in the early episodes, was how neatly the series fits into the late-2010s wave of Korean historical-romantic comedies that were happy to be accessible without becoming sloppy. This one is less a grand political saga than a carefully balanced hybrid: intrigue, fish-out-of-water comedy, a love story built on practical friction rather than destiny, and just enough palace conspiracy to keep the floor from going soft under your feet.
The director, Lee Jong-jae, comes at it with a steady hand rather than a flashy one. He’s not trying to turn Joseon into a museum exhibit or an action playground. He’s more interested in the awkwardness of bodies in space — a prince who no longer knows how to stand, a woman who has learned to survive by standing her ground, a court that treats appearance as if it were law.
That’s why the series’ most successful passages feel almost domestic. The show is at its best when it lingers on work: carrying water, preparing food, moving through narrow village rooms where status can’t get through the door. The color palette leans soft and earthy outside the palace, then stiffens into polished wood, lacquer, and layered fabric once the story drifts back toward power.
That contrast does more than separate settings. It tells you what kind of life is being mistaken for “ordinary.” The village, with all its labor and gossip and mud, is more truthful than the court’s spotless corridors. The court merely has better lighting.
Doh Kyung-soo is the series’ center of gravity, and I say that as someone who went in prepared for a polished idol-turned-actor and found something more interesting: restraint that never feels inert. He’s done serious screen work before, of course, but here he gets to use stillness as comedy, then gradually as ache. Watch the way his shoulders change.
"A charming and popular historical romance that captures broad audience affection despite occasional debates over pacing."
Audiences have widely embraced this Korean period romance, propelling it to high ratings among tens of thousands of dedicated drama fans. As [latestnetflix.com]() notes, the mix of historical setting and romantic tension strikes an entertaining chord for viewers invested in full-length 75-minute episodes, even if early impressions often prompt newcomers to weigh whether the show is worth the extended commitment. While international reception is generally glowing, more critical cinephile circles have offered a slightly more subdued rating.
The night before tvN put 100 Days My Prince on air, the cast sat on a V Live and made a bet they did not expect to pay. latestnetflix.com's take is that If Nielsen ever gave them 10 percent, they would learn EXO's "Growl" from Doh Kyung-soo and dance it as a group.Episode 1, September 10, 2018, opened at 5.026 percent nationwide. Episode 10, on October 9, hit 10.263, with a peak of 11.4, a new Monday-Tuesday high for the channel, beating Another Oh Hae Young's 9.9. Koreaboo said the dance happened. D.O. taught. The rest of Joseon tried to keep up. ,
tvN had confirmed the leads on March 21, the same day as the first script reading at CJ E&M in Sangam-dong. D.O. as Crown Prince Lee Yul. Nam Ji-hyun as Hong-shim, Joseon's oldest unmarried woman and the head of a village detective shop. Filming started in April. The series was fully pre-produced, which mattered six weeks later. ,
On May 13, actor Yoon Tae-young rear-ended a car waiting at a Gangnam red light. Korea JoongAng Daily put his blood alcohol at 0.14 percent and a suspended license. Korea Times said tvN pulled him from Dear Husband of 100 Days, the working title, and would recast. His agency called it a period of "deep regret and reflection." He is the son of former Samsung Electronics vice chairman Yoon Jong-yong. Wrap was still September 3. Sixteen episodes still landed on the Monday-Tuesday slot. ,

Kim Seon-ho played Jung Jae-yoon, a magistrate with face blindness who cannot recognize the amnesiac prince but can pick Hong-shim out of any crowd. Han So-hee played Kim So-hye, the neglected crown princess. In 2018 they were the names under the EXO member. Rewatch the Viki trailer now and those two faces are the reason a lot of people come back. Chen, another EXO voice, sang the cherry-blossom cue on the soundtrack. ,
Then the numbers would not sit down. The October 30 finale averaged 14.412 percent nationwide and 15.169 in Seoul. Allkpop put a peak of 16.7 on that hour and ranked the series fourth in tvN history at the time, behind Goblin, Reply 1988, and Mr. Sunshine, knocking Signal out of the club. Nam Ji-hyun told Soompi that after episode 1, older ladies in restaurants and cafe part-timers started stopping her. "It's the result of everyone's work. I think the fast pace of the plot also had a part." Netflix still files it as a 16-episode limited series. The Viki trailer is the prince who forgot everything except one person. ,
