Redemption by highway is a cheap promise

Stories that sell healing as a road trip make me itchy. A map, a dead parent, a last town where the daughter is finally whole. A Thousand Goodnights, the 2019 Taiwanese series Netflix made with SET TV, is built on that bet. Dai Tian-qing is walking toward a father she barely knew, a heritage she never had to carry, and a version of herself that might sit still.

Whether the series pays for that feeling is the only question that matters. I am working from the premise and the stills. I will not pretend I sat through the hours.

A winding Taiwanese highway at dusk, the sky streaked with pink and gold, as a lone car disappears into the distance.

After her father dies, Tian-qing, played by Lien Yu-han, finds a list of places he wanted to see. A posthumous bucket list. She retraces it across Taiwan.

That plot can turn into syrup in a week. The stills argue the island is supposed to do real work. A highway at dusk, pink and gold, one car eating the distance.

Hou Hsiao-hsien has spent a career letting Taiwan's geography sit in the frame until it becomes a person. These images want some of that gravity. Wanting it is not the same as earning the stillness.

Behind the Scenes of A Thousand Goodnights: Taiwan’s Romantic Drama with a Netflix Twist

A Thousand Goodnights (2019) is a Taiwanese romantic drama that blended local storytelling with global streaming appeal, marking one of Netflix’s early co-productions in Taiwan. The series, which aired from March to August 2019, followed Dai Tian-qing (played by Lien Yu-han) as she embarked on a journey across Taiwan to fulfill her late father’s wish and rediscover her roots—while navigating love and redemption along the way. But beyond its on-screen charm, latestnetflix.com maintains, the show’s production offers a glimpse into the challenges and opportunities of Taiwanese television in the streaming era.

A Netflix Co-Production with Local Roots

The series was a collaboration between Netflix and Sanlih E-Television (SET TV), a major Taiwanese broadcaster . This partnership was notable for its time, as Netflix was expanding its footprint in Asia and seeking local content with cross-border appeal. A Thousand Goodnights was one of the platform’s early Taiwanese co-productions, airing simultaneously on SET TV and its digital platform, Vidol . The 20-episode run (a standard length for Taiwanese dramas) gave the show room to develop its romantic and emotional arcs, though some viewers might have preferred a tighter narrative .

The series was directed by Ching-Chen Lin and Hung Po-hao, though some sources mistakenly credit Chen Rong Hui—a discrepancy likely due to overlapping production roles or early misreporting . The writing team included Lin Pei Yu and Shao Hui Ting, who crafted the story’s blend of personal growth and cultural exploration .

Cast Chemistry and Standout Performances

Nicholas Teo, a Malaysian-Taiwanese singer-actor, played the male lead, bringing his signature soft-spoken charm to the role of a love interest entangled in Dai Tian-qing’s journey. Lien Yu-han, known for her roles in Taiwanese dramas, anchored the series as the protagonist, balancing emotional vulnerability with determination. Supporting cast members like Chen Bo-zheng, Li Chung-lin, and Yao Ai-ning added depth to the ensemble, though the show’s focus remained squarely on the central romance .

One unconfirmed rumor suggests that Teo’s casting was partly influenced by his musical background, as the series featured original songs that complemented its nostalgic tone. However, no official sources confirm whether he contributed to the soundtrack .

Production Challenges and Cultural Touchstones

Filming across Taiwan was a deliberate choice, with the series showcasing scenic locations that doubled as backdrops for emotional moments. The show’s title, A Thousand Goodnights (一千個晚安), evoked themes of closure and new beginnings, tying into the protagonist’s quest to honor her father’s legacy. However, some critics noted that the pacing dragged in later episodes, a common pitfall for dramas with 20-episode runs .

The series also reflected broader trends in Taiwanese television, where co-productions with streaming platforms were becoming more common. While A Thousand Goodnights didn’t achieve the same cultural impact as some of its contemporaries, it remains a notable example of Taiwan’s efforts to blend traditional drama formats with global streaming demands.

Legacy and Availability

Despite its modest reception, A Thousand Goodnights is still available on Netflix in select regions, offering a snapshot of Taiwanese romantic dramas in the late 2010s. For fans of the genre, it’s a low-stakes, scenic watch—though don’t expect the high-octane drama of K-dramas or the slick production values of later Netflix originals.
