I’ve sat through enough films about domestic abuse to know the drill. The camera lingers on a bruise, the score swells with pity, and by the third act, justice arrives like a deus ex machina—neat, cathartic, and utterly false. The Wildflower doesn’t do that. It’s a film that understands the weight of silence, the way women in Nigeria (and everywhere) are taught to swallow their pain until it becomes a part of their bones.
Director Biodun Stephen doesn’t just show us the abuse; she forces us to sit in the suffocating quiet that follows, the kind that makes you wonder if screaming would even make a difference.
The film follows three women in the same compound, each trapped in her own version of hell. There’s Rolake Dabiri, the 24-year-old at the center of the story, whose breaking point isn’t a single violent act but the slow erosion of her will. Stephen’s camera doesn’t flinch from the brutality, but it’s the moments after—the way Rolake’s hands tremble as she pours tea, the way her eyes dart to the door when her husband’s footsteps approach—that linger.

THISDAY ran the trailer three days later and credited the gender-based screenplay to Niyi Akinmolayan and Mannie Oiseomaye. The first-look video Okonkwo posted on YouTube on 5 April splits the paper. The billed names on the streamer page are Okanlawon, Kuku, and Michael, with Abraham, Rex, Dike, Okunzuwa, Omeili, and Idemudia in the longer cast. IMDb logs 1 hour 47 minutes. There was no public salary leak and no viral set blowup in the English trades. The talk that stuck was a novelist from a Lagos men-are-mad collection walking into a GBV drama as the woman who refuses to stay quiet, a comedy star as the wife who has learned to live with a beating, and a 17-year-old in the same courtyard.,,,
If you came looking for a prairie romance, you have the wrong Wildflower. This one opened in Nigerian cinemas in May 2022, then sat on the US Netflix row as a dark compound story with a book author's face on the poster.
