I’ve seen this day before. Not August 8, exactly—mine was a Tuesday in March, the kind of day that starts with a missed alarm and ends with takeout eaten straight from the box while watching Groundhog Day for the third time. The time-loop rom-com is a genre that’s been wrung out like a wet towel, and yet here we are again, watching Mesa (Jarinporn Joonkiat) wake up to the same disaster: a ruined artifact, a ruined reputation, and a fiancé who keeps showing up at the worst possible moment. Same Day with Someone knows the rules.

It even winks at them. But the question isn’t whether it reinvents the wheel—it’s whether it makes the ride feel new anyway.

Yanyong Kuruaungkoul isn’t trying to break the mold. He’s working within it, and that’s both the film’s strength and its limitation. The director has made a career out of high-concept premises with broad appeal—Back to the 90s, App War, Mother Gamer—and Same Day with Someone fits neatly into that pattern.

It’s a Netflix Original, after all, which means it’s designed to be consumed in one sitting, forgotten by morning, and replaced by next week’s algorithmic suggestion. But there’s something quietly subversive in the way it uses the time-loop structure not just as a gimmick, but as a mirror. Mesa’s privilege isn’t just a character flaw; it’s the entire point.

The loop doesn’t just trap her in a day—it forces her to see the people she’s been stepping over to get to the top.

The first act is all about the comedy of repetition. Mesa’s attempts to prevent the artifact from breaking grow increasingly absurd: she tries to bribe the French tourists, she locks herself in the museum bathroom, she even stages a fake emergency to clear the room. The film leans into the slapstick, and it works—mostly because Joonkiat commits to the bit with a physicality that’s impossible to look away from.

She’s all sharp angles and exaggerated gestures, like a silent-film star who wandered into a rom-com. When she drunkenly rails at the Red Ribbon Goddess, demanding to know why she has to suffer, it’s the kind of moment that could feel tonally jarring in lesser hands. But Joonkiat sells it, because beneath the histrionics, you can see the panic setting in.
