The Road as a Wound: Overhaul and the Weight of Going Nowhere Fast

I’ve seen this movie before. Not the specifics—trucks roaring through São Paulo’s Brasilândia district, cargo heists gone sideways, a racer with nothing left to lose—but the shape of it. The way the camera lingers on a man’s hands gripping a steering wheel like it’s the only thing keeping him from dissolving into the night.

The way the plot accelerates just as the characters’ lives stall. Overhaul is a genre film, sure, but it’s also a Brazilian film, and that means it’s carrying more weight than its modest ambitions might suggest.

Tomás Portella doesn’t set out to reinvent the wheel here. If anything, he’s more interested in what happens when the wheel starts to wobble. The film’s opening act is a masterclass in controlled chaos: quick cuts of truck races at the Interlagos circuit, the roar of engines drowning out dialogue, the way the camera tilts just enough to make you feel the centrifugal force of a turn.

It’s exhilarating, in the way that only something slightly dangerous can be. (I’ve never been to a truck race, but I’ve stood too close to a subway platform as a train hurtles past, and that’s the same kind of thrill—equal parts awe and terror.)

A truck races through the neon-lit streets of São Paulo, its headlights cutting through the humid night air.

The problem is that Overhaul wants to be two things at once: a high-octane action flick and a character study of a man unraveling. Thiago Martins plays Roger, the racer-turned-getaway-driver, with a quiet intensity that’s easy to miss if you’re too busy watching the trucks. He’s got that rare quality of making stillness feel like a performance—his face is a roadmap of small betrayals, the way his jaw tightens when he’s lying, the way his eyes flicker with something like regret before he even realizes he’s made a mistake.

It’s the kind of work that makes you lean in, even when the script isn’t doing him any favors.

And the script, well. It’s where the film starts to lose its footing. The heist plot is serviceable, but the emotional beats feel borrowed from a dozen other movies.

Roger’s backstory—losing everything, being offered a way out that’s really just another trap—is so familiar it’s practically a genre trope at this point. The film tries to give him depth by throwing in a romantic subplot with Sheron Menezzes’ Rainha, but it’s undercooked, more of a placeholder than a real relationship. You can feel the film straining to make you care, and that’s always a bad sign.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

They bolted a truck cab onto a Dodge Ranger and called it a trucktana

Netflix billed Overhaul, the English title of Carga Maxima, as its first Brazilian action movie. Sheron Menezzes walked the Latin America Tudum stage in September 2022, introduced her co-stars, and showed a behind-the-scenes reel of practical stunts. latestnetflix.com's view is that Pipoca Moderna quoted the clip as speed and danger "with a Brazilian way of doing it."The film did not arrive that year. It went live on 27 September 2023.,

The gossip that stuck is hardware, not a feud. Folha reported shoots on Sao Paulo's Rodoanel, at Interlagos, at the Curitiba circuit, and on interior highways. The crew built what they nicknamed a trucktana. A Dodge Ranger pickup was stripped and fitted with mock truck cabs so the actors could play the scene while another driver ran the vehicle underneath at speed. Thiago Martins told the paper the fastest thing he had driven before this job was a Kombi he used for work. Formula Truck, he learned, tops out around 160 km/h. Tomas Portella sold him the part as an action film meant to "compete with the ones from abroad."

A City of God kid learning a gearbox

Martins plays Roger, a Formula Truck driver who starts hauling stolen freight to keep his team racing. Olhar Digital's trailer write-up still tags him as the City of God alumnus. Sheron plays Rainha, the rival on the track. Milhem Cortaz is Fumaca, the cargo boss. Raphael Logam, Evandro Mesquita, and Paulo Vilhena fill the crew. Gullane produced. Leandro Soares wrote. Portella, known locally for Impuros, directed. Netflix dropped the official trailer on 30 August 2023 with a line about accelerating because Carga Maxima was coming.,

Martins told Folha he used Paulo Vilhena's 2007 film O Magnata as a reference. Roger, he said, moves through "gale, hurricane, and calm" and "needs to stop being a kid, to be a family man." He liked "learning about mechanics, driving a truck with a trailer, taking a risk." That is the on-record training montage. No salary leak has attached itself to the production.

Cortaz's defense of Fumaca is the quote that travels. He told Folha the character came out of Rio trafficking, ran a drug den, then moved to Sao Paulo for cargo theft because he thought there would be fewer victims and less police confrontation. "He does not hurt anyone. He does not do anything that is not necessary," Cortaz said. He also said Fumaca lives well in a Sao Paulo favela because he feels protected there. That is the villain pitch. Whether viewers buy the soft-touch crime boss is a different argument.

A Tudum peek, then a year of waiting

Pipoca Moderna recapped the 2022 reel as a driver chased by police, barely escaping, then hunted by the gang when he tries to quit. Netflix had announced the project in 2021 and was already shooting by Tudum. The delay is the cleaner story. A first Brazilian action boast sat in Tudum recaps for a year while Gullane finished the trucks.,,

The rumor mill around clashing egos is empty. What exists is a stunt pickup with a fake cab, a lead who had to learn the gearbox on camera, and a director who said the quiet part out loud. He wanted the film next to imported action, not parked in a corner of the catalog labeled local. English menus now call it Overhaul. The Portuguese title still tells you what is in the trailer. Cargo, speed, and a getaway that is harder to leave than to take.,
