The Unlikely Charm of Super PupZ: When Superheroes Wear Collars

I’ll admit it: I wasn’t expecting much. A live-action kids’ series about dogs with superpowers, produced for Netflix in 2022, doesn’t exactly scream must-watch to someone who usually spends their evenings parsing the melancholy of Tarkovsky or the frenetic energy of early Scorsese. But here’s the thing about Super PupZ—it’s disarmingly, almost defiantly, good at what it sets out to do.

Not in the way that makes you want to write a think piece about the state of children’s media, but in the way that makes you lean back on the couch, remote in hand, and think, Huh. That was actually kind of delightful.

A group of kids and their super-powered dogs standing in a sunlit backyard, looking determined

The premise is simple, almost aggressively so: four dogs with superpowers—speed, strength, flight, and invisibility—team up with a group of kids to solve problems in their neighborhood. There’s a furry alien sidekick thrown in for good measure, because why not? The show’s tone is lighthearted, its pacing brisk, and its humor broad enough to land with the under-12 set without feeling like it’s talking down to them.

That’s no small feat. Kids’ media often stumbles into one of two traps: either it’s so saccharine it induces a sugar crash, or it’s so desperate to be "cool" that it forgets to be fun. Super PupZ avoids both. It’s silly, sure, but it’s not cynical.

It’s earnest without being cloying, and that’s a balance that even some of the most beloved family films struggle to strike.

What’s most surprising, though, is how well the show understands its audience. The kids in Super PupZ aren’t just props for the dogs’ antics; they’re active participants in the adventures, each with their own personalities and quirks. There’s a quiet kid who loves science, a confident girl who’s always ready with a plan, and a goofy best-friend duo whose dynamic feels lifted straight out of a classic sitcom.

The dogs, too, are more than just their powers. They’ve got distinct personalities—one’s a lovable goofball, another’s a bit of a diva—and the show takes the time to let those traits shine. It’s a small thing, but it’s the kind of attention to character that makes the difference between a show kids watch and one they remember.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

The Air Bud shop slipped the date, then the talking dogs vanished.

Robert Vince has spent decades putting dogs in Disney sequels. latestnetflix.com's take is that in 2022 he put four of them on Netflix with superpowers and a baby alien named Zeta.Super PupZ landed March 31. A kids blog had already said the original date got pushed and that Netflix had to put the trailer back up.,

This is a family factory. Kidscreen tracked the shop's streaming pivot in 2018, when Air Bud Entertainment sold Pup Academy to Disney Channel and a Pup Star Christmas movie to Netflix. Cineverse later named Super PupZ next to Pup Academy and Scaredy Cats as the Netflix half of a 14-franchise dog business run from Malibu and Vancouver. Anna McRoberts produced with Vince. Tyler Vince is on the producer line. They treat talking animals as inventory.,

Dave Foley plays Professor Dennis. Harland Williams is Fisk. Michael Teigen is observatory security chief Rocco. Foley and Williams are comedy vets talking to CGI dogs. The kids who take in the pack are Davide Fair, Aria Birch, Dylan Schombing, and Momona Tamada. Netflix billed nine TV-G episodes from Canada. The pups are Luna, Otis, Champ, and Haggis. They get powers after contact with Zeta, who is locked in a lab. Common Sense Media's Diondra Brown gave it 4 of 5 for age 5 and up, noted hazmat-suit chases, and wrote that Zeta is said to have anxiety and depression from loneliness. She also said the kid cast largely lacks diversity.,,

British Columbia's Leo Awards nominated Super PupZ for Best Youth or Children's Program, with Vince, McRoberts, Michael Strange, and Tyler Vince as producers. Vince and Piers Rae were nominated for screenwriting on the Pilot. Mark Irwin was nominated for cinematography on Saving Zeta. Kid actor Davide Fair was nominated for performance. The same shop's Scaredy Cats took the program prize. Super PupZ did not.

The Futon Critic later marked the series canceled or ended after one season of nine episodes, using the usual 12-month silence rule. A Sportskeeda recap on premiere day guessed that baby sister Bree's alien-language beat was a season 2 hook. That was fan math, not a pickup. IMDb sits at 5.8 from a couple hundred votes. Netflix After School still has the trailer, on the channel that used to be called Netflix Futures. The dogs got one cosmic weekend.,,,,
