The Trunk: A Marriage of Convenience, or a Coffin for Secrets?

I kept waiting for the trunk to open.

Not just the literal one—the waterlogged, barnacle-crusted thing that washes up on shore in the first episode, its contents spilling out like a bad dream—but the metaphorical one. The trunk as a vessel for all the things we bury: past marriages, hidden children, the lies we tell ourselves to keep moving. By the end of The Trunk, I wasn’t sure if the show had unlocked it or just polished the lid and called it a day.

A dimly lit room where Seo Hyun-jin’s character, Ji-eun, sits on the floor, her back against a wall, staring at a small, ornate box—the trunk’s first appearance, half-hidden in shadow.

This is a series that wants to be about the weight of secrets, but it’s also about the weight of performance—both on-screen and off. The premise is deceptively simple: a woman, Ji-eun (Seo Hyun-jin), enters into a one-year contract marriage with a man, Sang-hyun (Gong Yoo), through a shadowy agency that arranges such unions for people with something to hide. No love required.

No questions asked. Just two strangers playing house while the world outside assumes they’re in love. It’s a high-concept setup, the kind that could easily tip into melodrama or, worse, a glossy K-drama rom-com where the contract is just a flimsy excuse for will-they-won’t-they tension.

But The Trunk resists that. Or at least, it tries to. The first few episodes are a masterclass in slow-burn tension, the kind that seeps into your bones.

The cinematography is all muted blues and grays, the kind of palette that makes you feel like you’re watching the story through a fogged-up window. The score hums with a low, persistent dread, like the soundtrack to a memory you can’t quite place. And then there are the performances—Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin, two actors who have spent years perfecting the art of saying everything with their eyes.

Take the scene where Sang-hyun and Ji-eun have their first real conversation. It’s not even a conversation, really—just a few clipped sentences exchanged over takeout in a sterile apartment. But the way Gong Yoo’s fingers hover just above Seo Hyun-jin’s wrist, not touching, not quite, speaks volumes.

Audience Opinions

Audience 7.2/10
"Intense performances and elegant visuals drive a moody contract-marriage mystery whose slow pace and undercooked trunk plot leave a mixed aftertaste."

Emotional, layered acting from Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin, along with atmospheric cinematography and music, stands out as the clear draw, especially for those who enjoy darker, more mature relationship stories. latestnetflix.com's view is that the series leans heavily into psychological drama and symbolism, but the investigation thread, the marriage agency concept, and the trunk itself are often seen as muddled or underexplained, with late episodes dragging and the ending failing to deliver a fully satisfying payoff.

What viewers praise
  • Powerful lead acting Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin earn consistent praise for nuanced, emotionally rich performances that carry many scenes.
  • Strong on-screen chemistry The central relationship starts distant and guarded but gradually develops into a tender, fragile connection that feels earned.
  • Atmospheric cinematography Moody visuals, careful color grading, and memorable lake imagery create an art-house feel that suits the psychological tone.
  • Mature, introspective tone Focus on trauma, manipulation, marriage dynamics, and adult romance appeals to viewers wanting something more somber and complex than typical rom-com fare.
  • Evocative music and mood The score and overall soundscape are often singled out for enhancing tension and emotional undercurrents.
Common complaints
  • Very slow pacing The story unfolds so deliberately that several viewers struggled to stay engaged, especially in the later episodes.
  • Thin and confusing mystery The crime investigation and secret marriage agency are seen as poorly explained, with some reveals feeling like filler rather than driving the plot.
  • Underused trunk concept The titular trunk works symbolically but lacks concrete narrative importance, leaving expectations for a big reveal largely unmet.
  • Uneven ending and closure The finale is often described as rushed or underwritten, with loose ends around ex-partners, consequences for antagonists, and character backstories.
  • Fragmented structure and subplots Nonlinear flashbacks and side stories, including some family arcs, can feel disjointed and dilute focus from the core relationship.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Viewers called it prostitution. Gong Yoo still wanted the shadows.

Netflix put The Trunk up on November 29, 2024. Two days later allkpop was quoting Korean forums that had the series at number one at home and also calling the NM contract a prostitution plot with extra paperwork. Some people said they would not have touched it without Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin. latestnetflix.com's read is that Others called it one of the most boring dramas they had seen in months.

The pitch is already a fight. NM sells a one-year temporary marriage. Jeong-won, a music producer, becomes In-ji's fifth husband after his ex-wife signs him up so they can spend a year with other people and then, in her plan, remarry. A trunk washes up. The company starts leaking.

Gong Yoo did not pretend this was Goblin 2. At a Seoul press sit-down he said audiences prefer gentle stories, then admitted he keeps noticing the shadows inside a real relationship. He wanted this one to sit in those darker facets instead of offering escape. Seo Hyun-jin, playing NM deputy Noh In-ji, went the other way on volume. If the character's emotion is 100, she wanted one-tenth of it on camera, kept minimal. Director Kim Kyu-tae said he took the job because of the two of them, and that they exceeded what he expected.

The kiss they made him watch twice.

Netflix's own promo video is the messier document. The staff queued their kiss scenes while Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin sat there. Gong Yoo went, "Oh, here we go again! They never miss an opportunity, do they?" Seo Hyun-jin reminded him the director had praised his kissing on the take with cars going by. She said Kim Kyu-tae was excited to have captured it. In another clip he yelped that Jeong-won changes lanes without blinkers. She called him ahjussi.

That is the other half of the discourse. Koreaboo logged kitchen and bedroom scenes for Jung Yun-ha's Seo-yeon in the first two episodes that Korean viewers did not expect from a Gong Yoo title, plus a later bed scene for the leads. The pair still had to sell a tango that turns into a kiss In-ji did not see coming. Soompi ran the kitchen-to-living-room tease the day of the drop, with Jeong-won putting on music and In-ji saying it takes two to tango.

Same agency, six months, a lake.

This is the first time Gong Yoo and Seo Hyun-jin, both at Management Soop, worked together. Netflix confirmed them in July 2023. Kim Kyu-tae of Our Blues directed. Park Eun-young of Hwarang wrote. The source is Kim Ryeo-ryeong's novel. Wikipedia, citing Ten Asia, has cameras wrapping in February 2024 after about six months, with a Yeouido wrap party. The limited series is eight episodes. Cha Seung-won, Uhm Ji-won, Lee Jung-eun, and Jung Kyung-ho all took specials.

Tudum later spelled out the nasty joke inside the contract. Seo-yeon does not just leave. She books both of them new spouses for a year, waits for Jeong-won to repent, and meanwhile gets involved with her younger hire. Jeong-won is on sleeping pills. In-ji is his new wife whether he wants one or not. The official trailer still sells the trunk on the shore more than the forum fight. Watch it. The argument about what NM is selling is the thing people actually argued about.
