I’ve watched Thank You, Next twice now—once for the story, once for the seams. The first time, I laughed at the dating app disasters and winced at the breakup scenes, carried along by Serenay Sarıkaya’s magnetic presence. The second time, I noticed how the camera lingers on Leyla’s hands when she’s lying, how the jazz score swells just before a character delivers a devastating line, how the editing cuts between past and present like a heart skipping beats.

The show is designed to feel effortless, but its craft is anything but. That’s both its strength and its undoing.

Bertan Başaran and his team have built a world that’s sleek to the point of distraction. The Istanbul of Thank You, Next is a city of rooftop bars, sun-dappled offices, and apartments so tastefully decorated they feel like Pinterest boards come to life. The cinematography is all warm tones and shallow focus, turning every frame into a postcard.

It’s the kind of visual polish that makes you forget, for a moment, that you’re watching a story about heartbreak and bad decisions. That’s intentional. The show wants you to feel the allure of Leyla’s life—the glamour, the freedom, the endless possibilities—before it reminds you how easily it can all unravel.

And unravel it does. Leyla Taylan, a young lawyer navigating the minefield of modern dating after a brutal breakup, is a compelling protagonist not because she’s particularly original, but because Sarıkaya plays her with such raw, restless energy. There’s a scene in the first season where Leyla, fresh off a breakup, gets drunk at a bar and starts flirting with a stranger.

Sarıkaya doesn’t play it for laughs or tears—she plays it like someone who’s simultaneously desperate for connection and terrified of it. Her body language is all sharp edges: shoulders hunched, fingers drumming against the bar, eyes darting away every time the stranger leans in too close. It’s a small moment, but it’s the kind of detail that makes Leyla feel real.

She’s not just a rom-com heroine; she’s a woman who’s trying to outrun her own loneliness, and failing.

The problem is that the show often seems less interested in Leyla’s emotional journey than in the mechanics of her love life. Thank You, Next is structured like a dating app itself—swipe right for the charming ex, left for the brooding new guy, maybe a super-like for the mysterious stranger. The non-linear timeline, which jumps between past and present, is meant to mirror the way memory distorts heartbreak.
