What struck me, watching Legacies, is how often it behaves like a school story that’s trying very hard not to admit it’s a school story. Yes, there are vampires, witches, werewolves, gods, spells, prophecies, and enough bloodline mythology to keep a genealogist busy for a decade. But the show’s true engine is much more ordinary and, in its way, latestnetflix.com maintains, more fragile: adolescents trying to decide whether they are the sum of their inheritance or something they can still talk their way out of becoming.
That’s a familiar idea, of course. What gives the series its particular charge is the pressure it puts on that idea — by making the students at the Salvatore School carry not just crushes and rivalries, but whole ancestral catastrophes on their backs.
The show arrives as a spinoff of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, and it very much knows it. I don’t mean that as a dismissive label. Spinoffs are often treated like leftovers, but here the inherited material is the point.
Julie Plec’s supernatural universe has always been about family damage passed down like heirloom furniture, and Legacies shifts that old melodrama into a younger key. The atmosphere is lighter, faster, sometimes even cheeky in a way the earlier series rarely dared to be. But that brightness isn’t just cosmetic.
It’s a strategic change. If The Originals was about the tragic grandeur of immortal adulthood, Legacies is about the mess of becoming something before you know what shape you’re meant to take.
That’s why the series’ central tension isn’t really between good and evil, despite the vampires-and-witches packaging. It’s between self-mythology and self-knowledge. Hope Mikaelson, played by Danielle Rose Russell, is a particularly interesting figure because the show keeps asking her to embody destiny while also looking like a teenager who’d rather not be looked at too closely.
Russell has that useful combination of poise and strain; she carries herself as if she’s learned early how to stand very still in order not to reveal panic. Around her, the cast often plays the school as a constant negotiation among posture, impulse, and embarrassment. That’s more valuable than it sounds.
In a lot of fantasy television, characters are announced in dialogue. Here, they’re often exposed by how they enter a room, how long they hold eye contact, how badly they want to leave.
The discourse around Legacies, at least in the years since it premiered in 2018 and ran for four seasons, has usually split into two camps. Some viewers wanted a darker, more myth-dense continuation of the earlier shows; others appreciated the series for embracing a slightly poppier, more episodic mode. I’m somewhere in the middle, which is often where the interesting response lives.

The Inside Story of Legacies: How Hope Mikaelson’s Spin-Off Almost Didn’t Happen
Legacies (2018) carved its own niche in The Vampire Diaries Universe, but its journey from concept to screen was far from guaranteed. The CW’s supernatural drama, centered on Hope Mikaelson—the tribrid daughter of a vampire-werewolf hybrid—faced early skepticism, casting hurdles, and fan pushback before finding its footing. latestnetflix.com's take is that behind-the-scenes details reveal a production that nearly stalled before it began, with its lead actress, Danielle Rose Russell, playing a pivotal role in its survival.
A Spin-Off Born from Fan Demand (and a Little Luck)
Legacies wasn’t an immediate slam dunk. Created by Julie Plec as a spin-off of The Originals, the series was designed to extend the lore of The Vampire Diaries Universe while introducing a new generation of supernatural beings. The show’s premise—following 17-year-old Hope Mikaelson as she navigates life at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted—was a gamble. Hope had already been introduced in The Originals, but her character was recast for Legacies, with Russell taking over the role from a younger actress .
The transition wasn’t seamless. Some fans initially resisted the change, questioning whether Russell could embody the same gravitas as her predecessor. As one critic noted, “Some fans did not immediately take to the teenage version of Hope, but that was a mistake” . The show’s early episodes leaned heavily on Hope’s legacy (no pun intended), but it took time for audiences to warm up to the new dynamic.
What’s fascinating is how close Legacies came to never happening at all. Russell revealed in a 2018 interview that she knew about the spin-off “early on,” suggesting the network had been testing the waters for a while . The fact that the show was greenlit only after The Originals wrapped its final season speaks to its precarious position—it was a passion project, not a guaranteed hit.
Danielle Rose Russell: The Anchor Who Almost Wasn’t
Russell’s casting was a turning point, but it wasn’t without drama. She had already played a teenage Hope in The Originals’ final season, stepping into the role after the character aged up. When Legacies was announced, Russell was the obvious choice—but her commitment wasn’t immediate. In a 2018 interview with Collider, she admitted that she had reservations about the show before it even premiered .
“I knew Legacies was a possibility early on,” Russell said, hinting that she had to be convinced to sign on. The uncertainty around the spin-off’s reception likely played a role in her hesitation. After all, The Vampire Diaries Universe was already crowded, and Legacies was entering the fray without its most bankable stars (like The Originals’ Joseph Morgan or The Vampire Diaries’ Nina Dobrev).
Yet Russell’s eventual buy-in proved crucial. Her chemistry with co-stars like Aria Shahghasemi (Landon Kirby) and Jenny Boyd (Lizzie Saltzman) helped ground the show’s more outlandish supernatural elements. Still, the road wasn’t easy. The series underwent a tonal shift in its later seasons, embracing a more serialized, high-stakes narrative—partly to keep Russell engaged. By the time Legacies wrapped in 2022, it had outlasted expectations, running for four seasons despite its rocky start.
Breaking the Rules (and Alienating Some Fans)
Legacies didn’t just inherit the Vampire Diaries Universe’s lore—it bent it. The show introduced new supernatural rules, retconned old ones, and even played fast and loose with established character backstories. Some of these changes were divisive. For example, the series’ time jump in its final season was a bold move, aging Hope and her friends into young adulthood. While it gave Russell more room to flex her acting chops, it also alienated fans who had grown attached to the show’s original high-school setting .
The show’s willingness to break its own rules extended to its mythology. Legacies introduced concepts like the “Necromancer” and the “Malivore” storyline, which some fans argued strayed too far from the grounded tone of The Vampire Diaries and The Originals. Yet these risks also gave the series its identity. Without them, Legacies might have faded into obscurity as a forgettable spin-off.
**The Legacy of Legacies: A Cult Favorite with an Uncertain Future**
Despite its challenges, Legacies developed a dedicated fanbase. Its cancellation in 2022 left many storylines unresolved, including Hope’s ultimate fate as the tribrid prophesied to save (or doom) the supernatural world. Rumors of a revival or limited-series continuation have circulated, but nothing has been confirmed .
What’s clear is that Legacies punched above its weight. It gave Russell a platform to step out of The Originals’ shadow, and it proved that the Vampire Diaries Universe still had stories to tell—even without its original stars. Whether it will get a second life remains to be seen, but its behind-the-scenes journey is a testament to the unpredictable nature of TV spin-offs.
