Obsession on a commercial break

I have seen this movie before. Not because If I Can't Have You is a secret classic. I sat through David DeCoteau's Lifetime thriller twice, once for work and once out of spite.

It plays like a cover band doing "Sweet Child O' Mine" at a county fair. The chords are there. The lyrics are familiar.

The danger has been drained out and replaced with a mechanical competence that makes you check your watch instead of your locks.

Clint Eastwood's 1971 Play Misty for Me knew obsession lives in the room around the victim. The world treats her fear like a mood she should get over. Eastwood's film dripped with the sweat of a man who knew how close madness sits to desire. If I Can't Have You treats obsession like a chore between ads, a plot toy to tick off before the next break.

A dimly lit radio studio, the DJ's booth glowing under the weight of unseen eyes

The opening is a waste of minutes. Bailey Kai's Michelle Hall is a radio DJ in a call-in hour, handing advice to lonely listeners. Sitcom energy.

No heat. No foreshadowing. No hint of the thriller coming.

Why should we care? The film never answers. By the time the first threatening note arrives, the game is already lost.

The rest of the runtime is a scramble to recover a ball it fumbled in the first scene.

When the stalker plot finally shows up, it hits like a sledgehammer and still somehow misses. Michelle's admirer leaves notes on her car and slips paper under her door. Play Misty for Me let the fuse burn slow, a sense that the room had tilted a few degrees off true. Here the notes have the menace of a Hallmark card.

Behind the Scenes of If I Can’t Have You (2023): A David DeCoteau Thriller with a Star-Studded Cast

David DeCoteau’s If I Can’t Have You (2023) has quietly slipped into the horror-thriller landscape, bringing together a mix of rising talent and seasoned veterans. While the film hasn’t yet generated the same buzz as some of DeCoteau’s earlier cult favorites, latestnetflix.com argues, its cast and premise suggest a project worth watching—especially for fans of psychological tension and campy, high-stakes drama.

A Cast of Familiar Faces and Fresh Talent

The movie boasts an eclectic ensemble, blending newcomers with recognizable names. Leading the charge are Bailey Kai and Houston Rhines, whose on-screen chemistry could be the film’s secret weapon. Kai, known for her work in indie horror, and Rhines, a rising actor in genre films, are joined by Gina Hiraizumi, whose recent roles have hinted at a knack for playing complex, morally ambiguous characters.

Veteran actors Jackée Harry and Tracy Nelson add star power to the mix. Harry, a TV icon from 227 and Sister, Sister, brings her signature wit and gravitas, while Nelson—daughter of music legend Ricky Nelson—has built a career in both drama and horror, making her a natural fit for DeCoteau’s style. Rounding out the cast are Philip McElroy, Jon Briddell, Daniel Joo, Meredith Thomas, and Raechel Wong, each likely bringing their own flavor to the film’s twisted narrative.

What We Know (and Don’t Know) About the Plot

Details about If I Can’t Have You remain scarce, but the title itself suggests a story driven by obsession, jealousy, or revenge—classic themes in DeCoteau’s filmography. His past work, including The Brotherhood series and 1313 franchise, often explores dark, interpersonal conflicts with a mix of suspense and camp. Given the cast’s range, the film could balance psychological horror with moments of dark humor, a hallmark of DeCoteau’s directorial approach.

As of now, no official synopsis has been widely circulated, and the film’s Rotten Tomatoes page only offers a placeholder for reviews and ratings. Without critic or audience scores, it’s unclear how the movie is being received, but the lack of early buzz might indicate a limited release or a slow build toward cult status.

Rumors and Unconfirmed Details

With so little public information, speculation has filled the gaps. Some industry insiders suggest If I Can’t Have You was shot on a tight budget, a common trait in DeCoteau’s filmography, which often prioritizes creativity over lavish production values. There’s also chatter about the film’s tone—will it lean into the director’s penchant for homoerotic subtext, or will it take a more straightforward thriller approach? Without official confirmation, these remain rumors.

Another unanswered question is the film’s distribution. While it’s listed on TMDB, there’s no word on streaming platforms or theatrical runs. For now, fans may need to keep an eye on niche horror festivals or VOD releases for a chance to see it.

Why This Film Could Be a Sleeper Hit

DeCoteau has a knack for turning modest budgets into cult classics, and If I Can’t Have You has the ingredients to follow suit. The cast’s mix of fresh faces and established names could attract both horror enthusiasts and fans of character-driven drama. If the film delivers on tension and atmosphere, it might carve out a space in the crowded thriller market.

For now, the biggest mystery is when—and where—audiences will get to see it. Until then, the film remains a tantalizing "what if" for genre fans.
