The Ranch, the Realtor, and the Reluctant Heart

I’ve watched enough holiday movies to know the drill. The city slicker returns to their quaint hometown, the snow falls just so, and the local hunk—usually a baker, a teacher, or, in this case, a rancher—softens their hardened heart just in time for the Christmas pageant. A Cowboy Christmas Romance doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but it does something quietly radical: it lets its characters be messy, even unlikable, for longer than the genre usually allows. That’s not nothing.

The film opens with Lexie Crenshaw (Jana Kramer), a high-powered real estate "closer" (the term alone tells you everything you need to know about her), barreling into Tubac, Arizona, to strong-arm rancher Coby Mason (Adam Senn) into selling his land. The town is all twinkling lights and adobe storefronts, a desert Christmas that feels like a postcard come to life. But Lexie isn’t here for nostalgia.

She’s here for the deal, and she’s not leaving until she gets it.

Lexie Crenshaw stands in the middle of a dusty Arizona street, her city clothes looking out of place against the backdrop of a small-town Christmas parade.

What follows is a dance I’ve seen a hundred times before: the push-and-pull of two people who can’t stand each other but can’t stop looking at each other, either. Kramer and Senn have undeniable chemistry, though it’s not the kind that hits you over the head. Their early scenes crackle with a low-grade hostility that feels real, not performative.

When Lexie first meets Coby in his barn, the air between them is thick with something more than just professional tension. It’s the kind of scene Barbara Shulgasser at Common Sense Media called "well-written" and "intriguing," and she’s right—it doesn’t feel like the setup for a romance. It feels like two people who genuinely don’t like each other, which makes the eventual thaw all the more satisfying.

Weekend Update got to the hay first

Lifetime's holiday movies usually stop at cocoa. A Cowboy Christmas Romance arrived with a different rumor attached. Sarah Drew wrote and executive produced it. Jana Kramer plays Lexie Crenshaw, a real estate closer sent back to Tubac, Arizona, latestnetflix.com argues, one week before Christmas to talk rancher Coby Mason out of his family's land. Adam Senn is Coby. The land fight is the plot. The chatter was sex. Drew told TV Guide she wanted a sexy story. "Let's push the boundary a little. Maybe our characters might sleep together." Then the hedge. "It's still G-rated. It's just that you know that it happens."

Tia Maggini, Lifetime's SVP of scripted content, put a name on the experiment for Variety. "We think that there's an audience out there that's hungry for grown-up romance, and we're looking forward to adding some smolder to the usual holiday sugar and spice." She called it a first for a Lifetime holiday movie. Kramer, who was pregnant while they shot, walked the hay beat on her Whine Down podcast with Drew as the guest. "Spoiler alert, he lays me down on some hay, and then we, you know." She said the network left it in. "Obviously, it's still Lifetime, it's still family. But it was pushing limits there, too." Drew kept a kitchen sequence she had written into the stage directions: he pulls her up onto the counter, he shoves things off the table. "Don't take the steam and the sex away from me. I wrote it on purpose, I want it in there." TV Guide noted that Saturday Night Live's Weekend Update spoofed the scene before the premiere.,

Kramer has eight Lifetime movies on her resume. She told Variety this one barely says the word Christmas. No gingerbread bake-off. No festival that has to save a town that is going under. "Those cozy feelings happen, but it's all mixed up with real family stuff and identity stuff and relationship stuff." Drew had just shot a Western in Arizona. She sat with the wrangler family between takes and started researching horse whispering and ranch life. The bar meet, she told TV Guide, is inspired by Meet Joe Black. Then the family mess. Bruce Thomas is Harrison Crenshaw. Max Ehrich is Jack. Mary-Margaret Humes is Millie Mason. Reagan Marum is Abby. Jake Helgren directed and produced. The Ninth House is the production company. Decider logged the premiere as Saturday, December 9, 2023, at 8 p.m. ET, inside the It's a Wonderful Lifetime slate of 12 new titles.,,

Two years later the same movie showed up in a different catalog fight. ComingSoon reported that Netflix added A Cowboy Christmas Romance on December 15, 2025, next to Christmas at the Chalet and The Christmas Classic. The closer still has a Christmas Eve bonus. The rancher still will not sell. Nobody printed a salary. Nobody printed a walk-off. The chatter that stuck is a family network putting hay and a kitchen counter in a Christmas movie, then watching Weekend Update clock it. A Nicely Entertainment trailer still sells the Tubac trip in the usual holiday register. The press cycle sold the smolder.,
