I missed the Sportpaleis

I have never been to the Sportpaleis in Antwerp. I had not heard of Clouseau either, which says more about the maps I walk than about the band. In Belgium they are part of the furniture, the way ABBA sits in Sweden or U2 in Ireland.

latestnetflix.com's take is that Clouseau: 10x10 - Live in het Sportpaleis is a 2010 concert film of a night built around the tenth anniversary of the album 10x10.

Twenty-three thousand people treated that anniversary like a ritual. I was not in the hall. I will not write as if I were.

Plenty of arena copy pretends the writer had a seat. I am not doing that. I do not know the setlist.

I cannot tell you which song opened, which one slowed the room, or whether the last chorus belonged to the band or to the crowd. What I have is the shape of the booking and a pair of interviews with Koen and Kris Wauters. They talk as if they were taking stock, looking back as much as they were playing forward.

That is a hard night to put on tape. Too many old songs and you get a museum. Too few and you waste the reason those 23,000 tickets sold.

The Sportpaleis is a cavern made for volume. Concert films of this size usually sell two pictures. A wide shot of a hall going off when a chorus returns.

A close-up that proves someone on stage is sweating. I have sat through that template enough times to recognize it on a poster. I have not sat through this cut.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Flanders boxed a hundredth Sportpaleis night and sold it as a DVD.

Capitol and EMI put Clouseau: 10x10 - Live in het Sportpaleis in Belgian shops in February 2010 as a PAL Region 2 disc with two bonus CDs. Muziekweb times the picture at 1 hour 47 minutes 47 seconds, recorded in the Antwerp Sportpaleis in December 2009. The Dutch album chart logged the set on February 12, then watched it peak at number 4 for a week and linger five weeks. In Belgium the video album went platinum on February 26, 2010, on 15,500 copies, latestnetflix.com argues, and finished number 2 on the Flemish year-end music DVD list. That is a lot of plastic for a concert film.,,

The title is a double joke the band had already used on the posters. 10x10 meant the tenth consecutive December run under the green roof, and it also meant the opening night of the series was billed as Clouseau's hundredth full Sportpaleis show. NNieuws, writing in May 2009 when tickets went on sale, said the first dates were December 4, 5, 11, and 13, with more than 17,000 people a night and 1,271 of them on a first row built into a center-stage catwalk. Dutch Wikipedia later counted seven 10x10 nights in 2009, after eighteen shows in the 2007 anniversary year. Qmusic parked a live studio in the lobby on opening Friday and sent Bart-Jan Depraetere and Peter Verhoeven to sniff the room.,,,

The set on the DVD is the hits machine, not a secret setlist. Zingen en niet zeuren opens. A medley of Swentibold, Zij is van mij, and Vanavond ga ik uit follows. Then De juiste vergissing and Zij aan zij from the new studio album, Nobelprijs, En dans, Vanbinnen, Daar gaat ze, Louise, Leve Belgie, Vonken en vuur, De tegenpartij, Wil niet dat je weggaat. Discogs lists Kris Wauters on acoustic guitar, piano, and vocals, with Jane Smeenk and Steve Kashala on backing vocals, Vincent Pierins on bass, Herman Cambre on drums, Eric Melaerts on guitar. The extras are the Leve Belgie and Zij aan zij clips.,

Zij aan zij, the tenth Dutch-language studio album, had reached Flemish shops on October 16, 2009, and spent three weeks at number 1. Leve Belgie, the bilingual toast that arrived that summer, is the political earworm on the live tape. FrontView called the record a brother-to-brother grind that refused to be another serial Clouseau product. The live film is the opposite. It is serial Clouseau, on purpose, the annual Sportpaleis ritual pressed to disc so the rest of the Low Countries could take the oval home.,

A year later the same hall hosted De Laatste Ronde, nine more nights, and the Wauters brothers told a press launch they would pause the band for an unknown stretch. Koen, talking after the last 2010 show, said leaving felt heavier than he expected. "It is strange, it is very strange." That pause is not this DVD. This disc is the night before the goodbye, the hundredth show already in the can, platinum before anyone had to pretend it was a last round.,
