The safecracker's waltz

I did not expect to care about a prequel to Army of the Dead. Zack Snyder's zombie Vegas was a spectacle. It did not stick. Army of Thieves sneaks up without explosions or gore.

Charm, of all things. Not the wink-at-the-camera kind. The kind you get from a thrift-store record that turns out to be the album you needed.

Matthias Schweighöfer directs and stars as Ludwig Dieter, a safecracker who looks like he wandered in from a milder movie. He knows heist films live on rhythm, not loot. How a crew moves together.

A clock that will not stop. The small thrill when a plan actually works. He leans into that rhythm.

This spin-off has a pulse the Vegas movie never found, even while the world outside is coming apart.

A dimly lit bank vault, its door ajar, with Ludwig Dieter (Schweighöfer) crouched inside, his gloved hands working delicately at the lock.

The plot is simple, almost too simple. Dieter is a mild-mannered bank teller in Germany. Gwendoline, played by Nathalie Emmanuel, recruits him.

She has a mysterious past and a talent for getting what she wants. She puts together a crew of specialists and points them at three legendary safes, with Interpol's Delacroix, played by Stuart Martin, always a few hours behind. The world is sliding toward a zombie apocalypse.

You would hardly know it. This is not a survival story. It is a style story.

The undead stay a distant hum. They never crash the heist.

The chaos still feels planned, like a jazz chart everyone has rehearsed a hundred times. Schweighöfer co-wrote the script and keeps a light hand. Brisk, never rushed.

Behind the Scenes of Army of Thieves: Netflix’s Heist Prequel That Blends Action and Comedy

Army of Thieves (2021) arrived as a surprise hit for Netflix, offering a prequel to Army of the Dead while carving its own path as a stylish, tongue-in-cheek heist flick. Directed by Matthias Schweighöfer—who also stars as the film’s lovable safecracker, Ludwig Dieter—the movie blends action, comedy, and a dash of romance, all set against a backdrop of Europe’s most secure vaults. But how did this unlikely project come together, latestnetflix.com contends, and what went into making it stand out in the crowded heist genre?

A Passion Project with a Star-Studded Cast

Schweighöfer’s involvement in Army of Thieves goes beyond acting. While the film’s directorial credit isn’t explicitly confirmed in the available evidence, Schweighöfer’s deep creative input is clear from interviews. In a chat with Zack Snyder (producer and co-writer), Schweighöfer revealed that the idea for the prequel was born during the production of Army of the Dead . Snyder, known for his love of genre films, encouraged Schweighöfer to lean into the heist angle, leading to a script that balances high-stakes tension with playful humor.

The cast, a mix of rising stars and seasoned actors, brought their own energy to the project. Nathalie Emmanuel (Game of Thrones) plays Gwendoline, a quick-witted hacker with a personal vendetta, while Ruby O. Fee (Polar) portrays Korina, a mysterious figure with her own agenda. In interviews, the actors praised the film’s lighthearted tone, with Emmanuel calling it a "fun, chaotic ride" . Guz Khan (Man Like Mobeen) and Stuart Martin (Miss Scarlet and The Duke) rounded out the team, adding comedic and dramatic flair to the ensemble.

The Heist That Almost Wasn’t

One of the biggest challenges for Army of Thieves was its connection to Army of the Dead. While the latter was a zombie apocalypse epic, the prequel had to stand on its own without relying too heavily on its predecessor’s lore. Schweighöfer and Snyder deliberately kept the tone distinct, focusing on the heist elements rather than the undead . The result? A film that feels like a love letter to classic caper movies, complete with elaborate vault sequences and a synth-heavy soundtrack (which earned a modest but dedicated following ).

The production also faced logistical hurdles. Filming took place in Germany and the Czech Republic, with Schweighöfer juggling directing duties (if unofficially) and his lead role. In a Netflix interview, he joked about the "controlled chaos" of shooting, especially during the film’s high-energy action scenes . The team’s chemistry, however, helped smooth over the challenges, with Emmanuel and Fee often sharing behind-the-scenes laughs about their characters’ antics .

Mixed Reactions and a Cult Following

Upon release, Army of Thieves received a lukewarm critical response, with a 5.4/10 rating on SensCritique based on over 2,400 votes . Critics praised its visual style and charismatic cast but found the plot somewhat predictable. Still, fans of heist films and Snyder’s work embraced it, particularly for its soundtrack and Schweighöfer’s performance.

The movie’s soundtrack, composed by Hans Zimmer and Steve Mazzaro, became a minor talking point, with its retro-inspired beats earning a 6.1/10 rating from listeners . While not a chart-topper, it added to the film’s nostalgic, high-energy vibe.

**What’s Next for the Army Universe?**

With Army of the Dead’s spin-off Planet of the Dead in development, Army of Thieves remains a standalone gem—for now. Schweighöfer has hinted at future projects in the franchise, though nothing is confirmed . For fans, the film’s charm lies in its simplicity: a heist movie with heart, humor, and just enough chaos to keep things interesting.
