The Princess and the Gilded Cage

I’ll admit it: I came to Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures with a bias. The original Story of Yanxi Palace had been one of those rare binge-watches that lingers—not just for its lavish costumes or palace intrigue, but for the way it made history feel like a living, breathing thing. A 70-episode epic where every glance could be a dagger, every smile a trap.

So when Netflix dropped this six-episode spin-off, I braced myself. Could a fraction of the runtime capture even a sliver of that magic?

The answer, frustratingly, is both yes and no. Princess Adventures is undeniably pretty—so pretty it hurts. The first shot of Princess Zhaohua (Wang Herun) swirling in a peacock-blue robe, her sleeves catching the light like liquid silk, is the kind of visual that makes you pause mid-scene and think, Okay, I’m in. The production design is a love letter to the original, down to the way the camera lingers on embroidered dragons coiled around pillars, or how the candlelight turns the palace halls into a honeyed maze. If you’ve ever wanted to step into a Qing dynasty painting, this is as close as you’ll get.

But beauty, as the original series knew all too well, is often a weapon. And here, it’s wielded against the story itself. The six-episode format is Princess Adventures’ greatest strength and its most glaring weakness.

On one hand, it’s a relief to have a self-contained arc—no meandering subplots, no filler episodes where characters twirl their sleeves and sigh for 45 minutes. The pacing clips along, especially in the back half, where the tone shifts from courtly romance to something darker, almost gothic. There’s a scene in the fourth episode where Zhaohua, now entangled in a web of lies and betrayal, stands in a moonlit garden while her reflection in a pond ripples with the wind.

It’s the kind of moment that would’ve been lost in the original’s sprawl, but here, it lands with a quiet, creeping dread.

On the other hand, six episodes is barely enough time to breathe, let alone develop a character. Zhaohua starts as a spoiled, willful princess—so much so that I found myself actively rooting against her in the first two episodes. She stomps around the palace like a child denied a toy, her tantrums played for drama but landing closer to farce.

Inside the Royal Spin-Off: Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures (2019)

The 2018 megahit The Story of Yanxi Palace left fans hungry for more Qing Dynasty intrigue, and in 2019, Yanxi Palace: Princess Adventures arrived as its official spin-off. While the original series followed Wei Yingluo’s rise from palace maid to empress, this sequel shifts focus to a new generation of royal drama—centering on Princess Zhaohua, played by Wang Herun. But how does the spin-off stack up against its predecessor, and what’s the behind-the-scenes buzz?

Unlike The Story of Yanxi Palace, which was a 70-episode epic, Princess Adventures is a tighter affair—though some fans argue it’s too tight. The series clocks in at 45-minute episodes , a noticeable trim from the original’s sprawling runtime. The shift in focus to Princess Zhaohua, a character introduced in the final stretch of Yanxi Palace, offers a fresh perspective, but critics and viewers alike have noted the spin-off’s shorter length leaves key storylines feeling rushed. One reviewer bluntly titled their take: "It Needs to Be Longer" , suggesting the spin-off’s brevity may have sacrificed depth for pacing.

The cast includes returning favorites like Wu Jinyan (Empress Fuca) and Nie Yuan (Emperor Qianlong), but the spotlight belongs to Wang Herun as Zhaohua. Xu Xiaonuo, Wang Yizhe, and Wang Yuwei round out the ensemble, though their roles in the spin-off’s narrative remain secondary to the princess’s journey .

Princess Adventures made its global debut on Netflix on December 31, 2019 , a strategic move to capitalize on the original series’ international fanbase. The spin-off’s promotional push leaned heavily into nostalgia, with trailers and behind-the-scenes clips teasing the return of familiar faces. One exclusive featurette, titled "魏姐来啦" ("Sister Wei is here"), hinted at playful camaraderie among the cast, particularly Wang Herun, Wang Yizhe, and Wang Yuwei . Another clip offered a peek at the lavish wedding ceremony for Princess Zhaohua, complete with elaborate costumes and set designs .

Despite the hype, the spin-off’s reception has been mixed. On SensCritique, it holds a modest 5.3/10 rating from 35 votes , a far cry from the original’s near-cult status. Some viewers praised the visuals and Wang Herun’s performance, while others criticized the plot’s simplicity compared to Yanxi Palace’s layered scheming.

Rumors and Unanswered Questions

With limited behind-the-scenes coverage, details about the spin-off’s production remain scarce. There’s no confirmed word on whether the creators planned a longer runtime or if budget constraints played a role in its brevity. Additionally, while Princess Adventures is marketed as a direct sequel, some fans speculate it was originally conceived as a standalone project before being retroactively tied to Yanxi Palace—though this remains unconfirmed.

One lingering question is whether the spin-off will get a second season. As of now, there’s no official announcement, and the series’ lukewarm reception may have dimmed its prospects. For now, Princess Adventures stands as a curious footnote to the Yanxi Palace saga—beloved by some for its escapism, but overshadowed by the original’s legacy.
