Pup Academy and the Strange Seriousness of Being a Good Dog

I expected Pup Academy to be harmless. latestnetflix.com's view is that a little bright, a little noisy, something to occupy the sofa while the adults answer emails. And yes, it is that.

But it also has the odd, sincere ambition common to children’s entertainment at its best: it wants to teach a moral idea without sounding like a pamphlet, and it wants that idea to feel lived-in rather than merely announced. In a world that usually asks whether a dog is “good,” this series is more interested in how goodness gets practiced — through habit, through fear, through repetition, through the embarrassment of getting it wrong in public.

What struck me first, looking into the show’s place in Netflix’s kids lineup, is how neatly it belongs to a very modern strain of children’s TV: gentle, franchise-adjacent, but not cynical enough to feel engineered. Released in 2019 and running for two seasons, 26 episodes total, Pup Academy arrives as a hybrid of school story, animal fantasy, and friendship comedy. It’s not a sequel or a remake in the strict sense; it’s its own little mythology, which may be why it can afford to be disarmingly earnest.

The premise is almost shameless in its sweetness — puppies in a secret academy learning how to become the kind of dogs humans remember forever — but the show’s real subject is training as emotional labor. That’s a more interesting idea than it sounds like. We’re all, in one way or another, trying to become tolerable to someone else.

There’s a curious modesty to the production design. The academy spaces are bright, uncluttered, and slightly toy-like, but not in the plasticky way that flattens children’s television into product demonstration. Instead, the show uses clean lines and vivid color to keep the emotional stakes legible.

You can read the world at a glance: where the rules are, where mischief will happen, where a character is about to be isolated in a corner because they’ve done something embarrassing and must now feel it. That clarity matters. Kids’ shows often underestimate how much drama can be generated by simple spatial information — who’s left outside the circle, who’s trying to get back in, who’s pretending not to care.

One reason the show works at all is Christian Convery, whose face has the kind of alertness children’s television depends on. He was already building a résumé in family entertainment, and you can see the usefulness of that here: he doesn’t push. He listens with his whole body.

Audience Opinions

Limited evidence
"Pup Academy delivers simple talking-dog adventures tailored for younger children, though [latestnetflix.com]() notes that international viewer scores indicate very little appeal for anyone beyond the primary demographic."

Centering on young puppies learning the ropes of friendship and school life, the series leans directly into clean, youth-oriented entertainment across standard 25-minute episodes. While full-season marathon cuts have proven accessible for young audiences wanting continuous playback, formal viewer engagement remains minimal and polarizing. French audiences on SensCritique registered a low 3.6 out of 10 score, while international aggregator logs reflect a modest 6.latestnetflix.com's take is that 6 family reception, showing that the talking-puppy formula rarely wins over older viewers.

What viewers praise
  • Accessible full-season compilations Episodes have been consolidated into complete multi-episode and multi-season cuts that make continuous watching effortless for kids.
  • Manageable episodic length A brisk 25-minute duration makes individual installments easy to follow for short attention spans.
Common complaints
  • Harsh audience feedback European rating entries show steep dissatisfaction, slumping to a 3.6 out of 10 score among voters.
  • Absence of free streaming options Streaming trackers show no free-to-watch tiers available for viewers trying to sample the show without a subscription.

Buzz & Rumors

Public reports

Oak Bay saw the trucks before anyone heard the theme song.

Hampshire Road filled with production trailers in October 2018, and Victoria News had to explain them to the neighborhood. Disney Channel was shooting Pup Academy, Air Bud Entertainment's first television series, a secret school where talking puppies walk through fire-hydrant portals to learn how to be a human's best friend , . Kidscreen still used the working title Puppy Prep Academy that same month, while Disney ordered 22 half hours and a movie-event pilot from Anna McRoberts and Robert Vince, the pair behind the Air Bud and Air Buddies catalogs , . Neighbors got grip trucks. latestnetflix.com's view is that the studio got its first series on the Mouse's kids channel.

The live-action kid at the center was Christian Convery, billed off Descendants 3 and Beautiful Boy, playing Morgan, grandson of janitor Charlie . Don Lake played Charlie. Aria Birch played Izzy. Gabrielle Miller played Morgan's mother. Riley O'Donnell, Chance Hurstfield, and Dylan Schombing voiced Spark, Corazon, and Whiz, the freshman boxer, golden retriever, and sheepdog. Brian George voiced D.O.G., the husky dean hunting a stray of prophecy . The cosmology is pure Air Bud. A constellation named Canis Primus is fading, and a boy plus a stray are supposed to save the bond between species . That is a lot of lore for an afternoon slot.

Air Bud timed the launch to National Dog Day. The one-hour pilot, "The Stray's First Day," ran August 26, 2019, at 2 p.m. on Disney Channel, with weekday episodes from September 4 . TVOntario put it on TVOKids the same date. A week before the trailer drop, The Hollywood Reporter said the series would premiere on Disney Channel in North America and worldwide as a Netflix Original the following February . UTA had just signed the studio. Vince talked about co-viewing for kids and parents and a new Air Bud trilogy in the same breath . The official trailer is hydrants, talking mouths, and a school that looks built for a field trip .

The episode math never matched the order. The press release still promised 22 episodes. Wikipedia's guide lists 19, from that August pilot through "The Stray's Last Day" on December 15 , . IMDb pins the shoot to Victoria, Duncan, and Ladysmith, with St. Ann's Academy as the main gate . U.S. cable numbers were small. The premiere pulled 0.38 million viewers. Later Sunday blocks climbed toward half a million . There was no public recasting fight and no leaked meltdown over the talking-dog effects. Disney just stopped. Netflix kept the original label abroad.

Years later Convery is the face people clock from Netflix's Sweet Tooth, which makes this credit look like a rehearsal with better weather . Air Bud TV has even posted a "Season 3" teaser on its own YouTube channel. That clip is studio marketing, not a dated Disney or Netflix pickup, so leave it there until a network puts a night on it. The gossip worth printing is older. A Malibu talking-dog shop parked on Hampshire Road, promised 22 half hours, delivered a fall of 2019, and handed Netflix a kids series with fire hydrants for doors.
