The Burden of the Mask

Any show that needs a diagram to explain who loves whom usually sets off alarm bells for me. *Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug & Cat Noir* should be unbearable on paper. Marinette is in love with Adrien. Adrien is in love with Ladybug. Ladybug is secretly Marinette, and Adrien is secretly Cat Noir. Neither of them knows it. It is a two-person romance somehow shaped like a square, which is ridiculous enough to be annoying. Instead, Thomas Astruc makes it feel exactly like being fourteen: overcomplicated, earnest, embarrassing, and weirdly intense. (A geometric impossibility that shouldn't work, yet somehow sustains 155 episodes.)



What started in 2015 as a brightly colored monster-of-the-week setup gradually turns into something heavier. The early run looks like pure Saturday-morning comfort food: pun-filled villains, transformation sequences with more than a little *Sailor Moon* in their DNA, and a tidy reset at the end of the episode. But if you stay with it, the show begins to lean on the cost of all that heroism. Protecting Paris stops feeling like an after-school fantasy and starts looking like a burden Marinette carries in her body.

Anouck Hautbois is a big reason that shift works. Her Marinette isn’t just cute and flustered. You can hear the tiredness building underneath the stammers. When Marinette is alone, Hautbois drops her voice into something lower and more worn, like this kid is already running on fumes. Benjamin Bollen finds the same sadness from the other side with Adrien. Cat Noir isn’t merely a costume; it’s the only place Adrien gets to feel loose. Once the mask is on, the polished stiffness of the perfect son disappears and he finally moves like someone who can breathe.



Fans obsess over the umbrella scene, and honestly, I get it. In the rain, during that origin flashback, Adrien reaches out to apologize and offers Marinette shelter. The show doesn’t rush the beat. It sits in the small distance between them: his hesitant arm, her shoulders easing a little, the quiet surprise of someone being kind at exactly the right moment. Then the umbrella snaps shut on him and breaks the spell with a clumsy little gag. That balance is the magic. The rain actually sounds like rain, not filler noise, and the stillness gives the whole scene real weight.

Hawk Moth could have been pure camp—a man in a butterfly lair talking to himself—but the grief underneath him keeps the whole thing from floating away. He isn’t chasing power for its own sake. He’s a widower, and he’s also Adrien's father, because this show never chooses the simple route, trying to bend reality hard enough to get his wife back.



The series knows how silly it can be. Turning a frustrated pigeon-feeder into a supervillain with a magical butterfly is objectively goofy, and *Miraculous* doesn’t pretend otherwise. That’s part of the pull. *CBR* once called it "bizarrely addicting," which feels dead on; the maddening loops and narrative frustrations somehow feed the charm instead of killing it. Your mileage is going to depend on how much patience you have for teenagers missing the obvious.

What sticks with me is the way the show treats adolescence as a kind of open wound. Jealousy, rejection, perfectionism, panic—they don’t just hurt here, they literally become monsters. That’s what "akumatization" is: ordinary pain curdling into something that can wreck a whole city. And the answer isn’t domination. Ladybug fixes things with grace, resets the damage, catches the dark butterfly, gives people their lives back. If puberty came with that sort of cleanup, we all would have survived it better.
